3-3-13: Subs Unsung Heros for Phantoms This Season

If any season has been able to cast the importance of a team having substitute players on a roster, this season has been it for the Phantoms. Since the Yellow & Black began playing in the Fall of 2002, the team has relied on these 'fill-in' players to fill the holes left by it's full-time members due to sickness, vacation, work issues and more. Fortunately, the team has kept in contact with many of its former players and rely on them during the last-minute notices to fill an open position. "While we have some new faces that become involved with the Phantoms every now and then, we are extremely fortunate and thankful for the great supporting cast of players and subs that have allowed us to remain a constiant team for over a decade," said team goaltender Kevin Wootton. "We know it isn't easy for anyone to put down their project and their family at the last minute and take a drive to the rink to play a game, and while we make every attempt to give subs a full-day notice, it is rewarding to know that they too have the heart and passion for Phantom Hockey," said Wootton. This season has tested the Phantoms on their ability to have a full team every night.  Since the beginning of the season, the team has utilized a sub player in all but two of its already 18 played games (as of March 4th).  One of those subs, who is new the Phantoms this season, is Zach Brouwer.  Zach came to the Phantoms by way of fellow friend and former Grandville teammate Nate Skoboda. "Goldy Locks (nickname given to Brouwer by the team) has been our go-to sub this season and he brings a great presence of offensive and defensive capabilities to the Phantoms," said Wootton. Brouwer has already registered 12 points on the season during his sub ventures with the Phantoms. "Zach has been a huge boost to the team on the ice and in the locker room and we are glad that he has been able to play so much as a sub this season," said Wootton.  The other subs that have been called on by the Phantoms all have previous Tours-Of-Duty for the Phantoms, including Chris Benedict, Nate Tyler, Mitch Hoolsema, Jordan Tompkins, Gordie Anderson and Andrew Erickson. "We are extremely happy to be a part of a team that has such a great core of full-time and substitute players, it makes a job of running and origanziing a team very easy," said Wootton.
