There was no St. Patricks Weekend massacre for the West Michigan Phantoms during the Irish Holiday, as the Phantoms cruised to an 8-0 shut-out victory over WIFC in Walker Ice & Fitness action on Sunday.  The victory clinched no-less-than fourth place for the Phantoms during the Winter 2010 season which still has two games remaining prior to the post-season.  The victory also improved the Phantoms record to 12-5-2 on the season.  The Phantoms were led by Jason Schemmel and Nate Skoboda with four points each on the night, including a three-goal hat-trick for Schemmel to co-lead the Yellow Shirts to the win.  Gene Smith was able to open the games scoring six minutes into the opening frame, as the first-season Muskegon-native was able to net his first goal as a Phantom (assisted by Jason Schemmel) to jump-start the Phantoms offense.  Smiths goal would occur during his second shift of the contest, after the team pushed the former Mona Shores Grad from defense to office for the game against WIFC.  Less than a minute later, Jason Schemmel would strike with his sixth of the season (assisted by Gene Smith and Nate Skoboda) to increase the Phantom lead to 2-0.  The Phantoms offense would continue for two more goals during the opening period as Jason Schemmel (assisted by Nate Skoboda and Gene Smith) and Nate Skoboda (unassisted) would each light the lamp in the final minutes to give the Yellow Shirts a 4-0 lead after the opening period.  Early in the second period, the Phantoms would strike with a pair to catapult the now 32nd Season Phantoms into a 6-0 lead.  Matt Mead would net his eighth of the season (assisted by brother Sean Wert and Chad Manning) and Brad Zehr his eighth of the season (assisted by Trent Kik and Nate Skoboda) to complete the early second period push by the Phantoms.  For Brad Zehr, the goal just 2:05 into the frame would extend his goal scoring streak to five games.  With the Phantoms leading 6-0 entering the third period, the team would continue to mount offensive pressure.  Less than three minutes into the final frame, Brad Zehr would net his second of the game (unassisted) to increase the Phantom lead to 7-0.  Exactly 1:02 later, the Phantoms Jason Schemmel would complete the hat-trick with his eighth goal of the season to complete the games scoring at 8-0.  On the night, as mentioned Jason Schemmel (3G, 1A) and Nate Skoboda (1G, 3A) would lead the Phantoms with points followed by Gene Smith with three points (1G, 2A) and Brad Zehr with two points (2G).  Phantom netminder Kevin Wootton would have a relatively easy night between the pipes, with an exception of a Woot-Patented-Two-Pad-Stack-Save late in the final frame to preserve the shut-out.  The shut-marks the second of the season for the Phantoms and Wootton as the previous Shut-out was incurred on December 18th in a 9-0 victory over West Michigan Precision Machining.  The Phantoms have completed the regular-season series against WIFC with a perfect 2-0 record and have outscored WIFC 13-1 in the process.  The Phantoms played without the services of Matt Zehr who remains on the IR with a lower-leg injury and is expected to remain out of action for the next two games for the Phantoms.  The Phantoms will return to action on Sunday, March 25th to tangle with Pioneer during a late 10:30pm face-off at Walker Ice & Fitness.
