The West Michigan Phantoms put an extremely positive ending to 2011 on Sunday, as the Men of Phantom Nation skated to a 9-0 victory to close out a very successful and year of change for the Phantoms. Powered by seven different goal scorers, the Phantoms were able to record a season high nine goals against their opposition and in the process, attain Phantom History as team netminder Kevin Wootton would record his first ice hockey shut-out. Following a brief team meeting to discuss the lagging offense prior to the game, the Phantoms rose to the challenge and wasted no time in beginning what would become an offensive filled night for the Boys of Phantom Hockey. Just 2:41 into the duel, the Phantom's Jason Schemmel would strike with his third goal of the season (assisted by Chad Manning) to give the Phantoms a 1-0 lead. For Manning, the assist would become his first point of the season and close to within four points of 100 in his Phantom career. Late in the opening period, the Phantoms would go on a twenty-second tare, as two Phantom strikes would find the back of the net to increase the Phantom lead to 3-0. Gordie Anderson (unassisted-5th of season) and Trent Kik (assisted by Matt Zehr and Derek Reid- 1st goal of season) would combine for the '20-Second-Ride' to secure that 3-0 lead after the opening 13 minutes. In the second period, the Phantom offense would continue to notch tallies on the scoreboard. Just 18 seconds in, Darin Lambert would unleash his first of two goals during the night (assisted by Sean Wert) and mount the Phantoms into a 4=0 lead. Forty-two seconds later, Casey Rosenberg (assisted by Derek Reid and Sean Wert) would continue the Phantom offense as the Norton Shores Fireman would deliver his fifth of the season to expand the lead to 5-0. Minutes later, Derek Reid (assisted by Trent Kik) would net his first of the season, as the Phantom-sub would make his defensive presence known on the scoresheet to increase the Phantom lead to 6-0. The Phantoms would continue their offensive surge in the third period and Sean Wert would begin the third period trifecta for the Phantoms. Wert would crack the scoresheet 3:38 into the final frame, as the former Rouge River standout would net his fifth of the season to increase the yellow shirt's lead to 7-0 (assisted by Darin Lambert and Brad Zehr). Four minutes later, Darin Lambert would register his second goal of the game (assisted by Matt Zehr and Sean Wert). With four minutes remaining in the contest, Casey Rosenberg would retake sole control of the team lead in scoring with his sixth of the season (assisted by Sean Wert) to complete the Phantom offensive surge with a 9-0 lead. Phantom netminder Kevin Wootton would play a decent game, turning aside all shots he faced including a double-two-pad-stack in the opening period and several breakaways to record his first ice hockey shut-out. Neither WM Precision Machine or the Phantoms would record any penalties during the final game of Sunday Night Hockey at Walker Ice & Fitness. The Phantoms will take a couple of weeks off before returning on January 8th to face-off against the league leading DeBoer at 7:10.
