With the strength of four goals by Andrew Erickson, the West Michigan Phantoms were able to put a positive ending to the teams inaugural Ice Season on Tuesday night as the Yellow & Black skated to a thrilling 7-5 victory against MRI.  The win, which was the third against MRI this season, was yet another classic duel between two very competitive and closely matched clubs at Walker Ice & Fitness.  The Phantoms would jump into a quick 1-0 lead just minutes into the season finale, as Jordan Tompkins would stage his fifth of the season (assisted by Andrew Erickson and Nate Skoboda) to lift the Phantoms into a 1-0 lead.  Just nine seconds later, the Phantoms would strike again as the Muskegon-Native Brad Zehr would tally his sixth of the campaign (unassisted) to stun MRI with a 9-Second-Phantom-Ride.  The Phantoms offense would keep pumping, as 2:53 later the Phantoms Andrew Erickson would stage his sixth goal of the season (unassisted) to push the Phantoms into a three goal lead at 3-0.  However, a MRI two-on-one race into the Phantom zone 1:26 later would allow MRI to trim the lead to two goals, as an undefended MRI forward would receive a crisp-clean centering pass at the mouth of the goal-line and burry the puck past the Phantom netminder Kevin Wootton to close within two goals of the Phantoms at the first intermission at 3-1 .  In the second period, MRI would put the pressure on the Phantoms and narrow the game to a singleton just minutes into the middle frame, as a breakaway goal would trim the Phantom lead to 3-2.  Minutes later, the Phantoms Andrew Erickson would strike with his second of the contest to restore the Phantom two-goal lead at 4-2 (assisted by Mitch Hoolsema).  As quickly as the Phantoms gained ground, the ground shifted yet again, as while skating shorthanded MRI was able to benefit from a Phantom netminders costly decision to not play the puck and  strike with a post-beating shot to climb back to within one goal of the Phantoms at 4-3.  Six minutes later, MRIs strong second period pressure would achieve the equalizer, as the Red-Shirts would complete the come-back and deadlock the duel at 4-4.  With the period drawing to a close, the Phantoms Andrew Erickson would strike with his third goal of the game to complete the hat-trick, as the Grandville Bulldog would cap an unassisted tally with just 54 seconds remaining in the second period to restore the Phantom lead entering the second intermission at 5-4.  In the third, MRI would climb back into a tie with the Phantoms, as the visitors would tie the contest for the second time in the game.  Sean Wert would put the Phantoms back on top three minutes later, as the former Phantom-Silver star would strike with his 14th of the season to restore the Phantom lead to 6-5 with 3:24 remaining in regulation (assisted by Andrew Erickson).  With the MRI goaltender pulled for the extra-attacker, the Phantom defense would stand their ground and refuse to let the opposition net the equalizer.  With 12 second remaining in regulation, the Phantoms Andrew Erickson would net his fourth of the game to seal the win for the Phantoms by the final of 7-5.  On the game, the Phantoms would be guilty of two minors for four minutes, while MRI was sentenced on four minors for ten minutes.  As mentioned, the victory was the third against MRI this season for the Phantoms who climbed to 3-0-0-1 against MRI.  The game completed the Phantoms inaugural season on Ice with a stunning 11-3-0-1 record.  The team will return to Walker Ice & Fitness in October to begin the teams 32nd season of Phantom Hockey.
