The West Michigan Phantoms were able to avoid a season sweep by the Coyote Uglies on Sunday, as team used goals from five different goal scorers to defeat the Uglies by the final of 6-4.The victory marks the first win against the Coyote Uglies this season by the Phantoms and improves the Phantoms record to 6-3 on the season.Eric Stubig would open the scoring late in the opening period, as the former Grand Haven Buccaneer would riffle a rocket to the back of the Coyote cage (assisted by Chris Benedict) to give the Phantoms a 1-0 lead. That lead would last just over a minute, as a Coyote rush into the Phantom end would yield a 2-on-1 opportunity and with the Phantom goaltender and defensemen tied to the shooter, a quick pass to a wide open Coyote to the right side of the Phantom cage would net the equalizer to net both teams as 1-1.Late in the opening period, Eric Stubig would connect again, as the first-season Phantom would net his third of the season on the powerplay (assisted by Nate Tyler) to give the Phantoms a 2-1 lead with just 1:33 remaining in the opening frame. Both the Phantoms and Coyotes would display some great hockey in the opening period, with the Phantoms outshooting the Coyotes 8-7.In the second period, the Coyotes would strike just 1:35 into the period to again bring both teams into a tie at 2-2.Chris Benedict would restore the Phantom lead at 3-2 with his 12th of the season with 6:26 remaining in the period, as the Phantom Co-Captain would receive a set-up from Jason Schemmel.A very turbulent and less-than-impressive Phantom finish would occur in the final minute of the second period, as the Phantoms would surrender two goals in the span of 48 seconds to allow the Coyote Uglies to climb into their first lead of the game entering the second intermission at 4-3.The Phantoms again managed to out shoot the Coyotes in the second period 12-9 to up their advantage to 20-17 through 32 minutes. In the third period, the Phantoms would regroup and set-up their quest to avoid the season-sweep.Gordie Anderson would equalize the contest just 59 seconds into the third period and 1:11 following the Coyote go-ahead goal, as the former Ground Zero member would net his seventh of the season and register the Phantoms second power-play goal of the contest (assisted by Eric Stubig) to net both teams back into a tie at 4-4.Ten Minutes would pass before the Phantoms would mount their second straight goal to again return positive territory.Chad Manning would score his team-leading 15th goal of the campaign, assisted by the teams second leading goal scorer Chris Benedict to edge the Phantoms in front 5-4.With 2:32 remaining in the contest, the Coyotes would be presented a glorious opportunity to achieve the equalizer, as the Phantoms Ryan Mylenek would be sentenced on a two-minor for high-sticking.The Phantom penalty killing unit would fair gallantly during the first 1:22 of the Coyotes Extra-Man-Band.At that moment in an attempt to clear the puck, the Phantoms Chris Benedict would inadvertently shoot the puck out of play on the far side of the rink creating a Coyotes 4-on-2 advantage for 38 seconds.Despite a time-out called by the Coyotes to collect their thoughts and develop a game plan for their two advantage, the Phantoms penalty killing unit would soar and preserve the slim one-goal lead for the Yellow and Black. With the Phantoms seeing the return of Ryan Mylenek to the rink following his penalty with 32 seconds remaining in game, the Coyotes would finally pull their goaltender for the extra attacker.Despite some great attempts by the Coyotes, the Phantoms Ryan Mylenek would put the icing on the cake, as the former Mona Shores defensive stand-out would net his fifth of the season to give the Phantoms a 6-4 decision over the Coyotes. The Phantoms again managed to out shoot the Coyotes 7-5 in the third period and would complete the game with a 27-21 advantage in shots. The Phantoms played without the services of Brian Doctor (injury) and John Dykehouse (injury).Tim Vanoverloop was again called into action to assist the inline version of Phantoms in the win.The Phantoms will return to action on September 11th to close out the regular season.
