The West Michigan Phantoms were able to etch another victory in the young season on Sunday, as the Yellow & Black dismantled Team Jager by the final of 8-2.  In the process, the Phantoms claimed their second consecutive victory against Team Jager dating back to last season. In the now 31 seasons of Phantom Hockey, many records and highlights have been achieved throughout the nearly nine year run of the Phantoms. On July 10th against Team Jager, another milestone was achieved and one that only two previous members have accomplished on behalf of Phantom Hockey. Just 3:30 into the second period, Chris Benedict joined the 100-Career-Phantom-Goal-Club, as the Muskegon Native recorded a breakaway goal against Dave Sny to give the former Navyman his triple-digit-feat in his very short Phantom Career. The 100-goal-tally would actually be his second of the contest and third of the game for Benedict, who joins Trent Kik and Tim Czycyk as the only other 100+ goal scoring Phantoms. The Phantoms quickly got things started, as Chris Benedict would open the games scoring just 15 seconds into the contest, as the Phantoms own 'Great One' would record his 99th Career Phantom strike (unassisted). Just shy of two minutes later, the Phantom's John Dykehouse would extend his goal scoring streak to two games and record his fourth of the season (assisted by Nate Tyler) to give the Phantoms a 2-0 lead. Chad Manning would answer the goals by Benedict and Dykehouse with 6:50 remaining in the opening period to again tie for the team lead in goals this season with four goals with Benedict and Dykehouse. Tim Czycyk would register his first of the season and 112th of his Phantom Career 1:10 following the Manning strike (unassisted) to push the Phantoms into a controlling 4-0 lead after the opening period. In the second period, an innocent and very slow moving shot would manage to pin-ball though the skates of the Phantom netminder Kevin Wootton and eventually trickle across the goal line just 1:57 into the period to put Team Jager on the board. However, Chris Benedict would get that goal back 33 seconds later on his Breakaway-100th-Career-Phantom clinching goal to restore the Phantom four goal grip at 5-1. Minutes later, Chad Manning would again tie Chris Benedict in the team lead for goals with five on the season, as the Phantom forward would receive a set-up feed by Chris Benedict to put the Phantoms in front with a 6-1 lead. However, Benedict would put up another strike just under two minutes later to complete the hat-trick and take over sole-control of the team goal scoring lead with six goals in two games (goal assisted by Eric Stubig). Late in the second period, Team Jager would manage to strike with another tally with 1:01 remaining to close out the second period with the Phantoms in front of a 7-2 lead. The cat and mouse chase would continue between Benedict and Manning in the third period, as just 56 seconds into the frame, Manning would record his own third goal of the game and his sixth goal in just two games for the Phantoms.  That early third period strike would be the lone tally for the Phantoms and close out game scoring with the Phantoms capping an 8-2 win. On the game, the Phantoms out shot Team Jager 30-24. The Phantoms would combine for six minor penalties for 12 minutes, while Team Jager was sentenced on three minors for six minutes. The Phantoms played without the services of Gordie Anderson, who was forced too sit out due to doctor orders. Anderson is expected to return to the Phantom lineup on July 17th when the Phantoms return to the rink to battle the Coyote Uglies at 3:00pm.
