The West Michigan Phantoms closed out a great season at Rivertown Sports in Grandville on Saturday, April 16th and in doing so, played the teams final game at the rink that first witnessed the Phantoms begin play in 2002.For the third consecutive season, the Phantoms advanced all the way to the championship game but came up short in the teams quest to capture the Aluminum division title. The Phantoms played a great contest against the KC Faggots and skated to an impressive 4-0 victory in the semi-finals of the Spring 2011 post-season, but fell to Eight Men & A Little Lady 4-0 in the championship game. The victory marked the third time in three seasons that the Yellow and Black were involved in the Rivertown play-offs and the second time in three seasons that the Phantoms advanced to the championship game. The Phantoms, who played under the name Phantom South at the Grandville rink, will complete their three season record with an 18-14-1-2 overall record.Phantom South which represented the southern team of the Phantom franchise, decided in late March to not return to Rivertown Sports for a fourth season and rather shift gears to Walker Ice & Fitness to embark on the franchises first ice team. Our second tour of duty at Rivertown Sports was a great experience and we were thankful to be able to keep the rich tradition of the Good Ole Boys intact for three additional seasons under the Phantom Banner, said Team General Manager Kevin Wootton. This exit from Rivertown Sports is sad as we will miss a lot of the players and management who we have played against us for so many seasons, but we look forward to experiencing ice hockey and begin a new chapter in the now 30 seasons of Phantom Hockey, Wootton added. The Phantoms were a part of Rivertown Sports from the Fall of 2002 until the Fall of 2006 when the club decided to shift play to Cedar Rock Sports Plex in Cedar Springs.Despite no active Phantom teams playing at Rivertown following that Fall 2006 departure, many Phantoms and former teammates continued to play on and off again at Rivertown prior to the start of what became of the Good Ole Boys in the Winter of 2008.The Good Ole Boys captured three championships in the Aluminum division from the Winter of 2008 through the teams last season Spring 2010.With the Good Ole Boys splitting up to play ice hockey in the Spring of 2010, the half that remained at Rivertown took on a group of Phantom members that were playing on main Phantom squad at Cedar Rock and formed Phantom South.Regardless of what the team is called, the Phantom group has remained pretty consistent over the years and we were fortunate to have the support and desire to have two active teams at the same time, Wootton said. This goes as a testament to the members who have and continue to play hockey as a team and really remember why we lace up the skates every week, said Wootton. We want to thank Rivertown Sports, Rick Rilett (Rivertown owner) and Main Street Pub (team sponsor) for your support over the past three seasons and your helpfulness in allowing the Phantoms to participate in a great league, Wootton said. The Phantoms will continue to keep the teams parent club at Cedar Rock Sports Plex in Cedar Springs and embark on the franchises first ice team on May 12th at Walker Ice & Fitness.
