The West Michigan Phantoms were able to halt their four-game losing skid on Sunday, as the team skated to a 5-3 victory over the Puck-Ups at the Cedar Rock Sports Plex in Cedar Springs. The victory marked the second time this season that the Phantoms were able to capture a win again the Puck-Ups and in the process raised the team's overall record to 2-2-0-2. The Phantoms were able to play a great brand of hockey, despite missing the services of five members during the game. Team Captain Chris Benedict and Justin Calkins were sidelined as the two remain on the team's injured reserved, John Dykehouse was a late scratch due to dental surgery the day before and Tim Vanoverloop and Chad Manning were scratched due to vacations. The Phantoms were able to secure the services of Casey Rosenberg, Chris Wietfeldt and Nate Tyler for the game to help with the numerous amount of Phantom absences. The Phantoms wasted no time getting on the board, as Trent Kik would begin the Phantom assault just 6:20 into the period (unassisted) and Trent quickly followed that up with his second of the night roughly 5:30 later to send the Phantoms into the intermission in charge of a 2-0 lead. The Men of Phantom Nation would continue to feed off of a lot of crisp and clean passes, as well as a desire to out hustle their opponents in the third period and that work would pay off.  With 4:16 remaining in the period while skating shorthanded, Trent Kik tallied his fifth of the season and third of the night to put the Phantoms in front of a commanding 3-0 lead. Less than two minutes later, Chris Wietfeldt would stage his first of the night and first for the Sunday team to continue the Puck-Up spirial towards the cellar. The Wietfeldt strike would send the Phantoms into the second intermission with a 4-0 lead and a healthy 18-12 shot advantage through 32 minutes. In the third period, a period that has been the worst for the Phantoms this season, the Puck-Ups would begin to claw their way back into contention. A Gordie Anderson turnover just inside the Phantom zone would witness the Puck-Ups tarnish the Phantom shut-out streak just 1:13 into the third period to narrow the Puck-Ups to within three. However, Chris Wietfeldt would again manage to come up large for the Phantoms, as the Wednesday Phantom-South member would stage his second of the night to restore the Phantom four-goal-grip at 5-1. The Puck-Ups would manage to feed off of late game chances presented by the Phantoms to tally two goals in the final 8:40 to come within two goals of the Phantoms who skated away with a 5-3 decision. On the game, the Phantoms out shot the Puck-Ups 26-20. The Phantoms were ticketed with two minors for four minutes and a single 10-minute misconduct.  The Puck-Ups were sentenced on two minors of their own for four minutes. The Phantoms will return to action on Sunday, March 27th to seek revenge against Barley Legal at 5:00pm.
