1-2-10: Phantoms Rally To Top Stallions in Overtime 3-2

The Phantoms have not been under more pressure in recent months than they were on Sunday in the second of four play-off games in the Bronze post-season at the Cedar Rock Sports Plex. In the end, the Phantoms used a late third period goal by Tim Czycyk and an overtime strike by Jason Schemmel to skate away with a much-needed 3-2 victory against the Stallions and draw their post-season record even at 1-1. The Phantoms, who entered the contest with a regular season record of 1-2 against the Stallions, played a very tight defensive game and displayed great puck control to defeat the Stallions in the extra frame. Trent Kik would kick-start the game festivities just 19 seconds into the second period, as a Brian Doctor dish up in front of the Phantom bench to a skating John Dykehouse would find Trent Kik looming and dooming in enemy territory unprotected and the Phantom captain would bury his first of the post-season for a 1-0 Phantom lead. Late in the middle period while the Phantoms Gordie Anderson was serving a two-minute minor for tripping, the Stallions powerplay unit would manage to achieve the equalizer with 3:03 remaining to claw their way back into a 1-1 deadlock with the yellow shirts at two periods. That powerplay tally would send both teams into the second intermission tied 1-1, with the Stallions holding the upper hand on shots at 17-13. In the third period, the Stallions would against net paydirt on their extra-man-band, as the Stallions would jump into their first and only lead fo the night at 2-1. The Phantoms would wait until the raining minutes of the third period to send the Phantom faithful to their feet. With 4:07 remaining in regulation, the Phantom's Tim Czycyk would beat the Stallions goalkeeper to bring both teams into a 2-2 tie. At the end of regulation, the Stallions were out shooting the 26-21. In the overtime, the Stallions nearly skated away with the victory if it wasn't for a tremendous Wootton-pad save just over a minute into the extra frame. Seconds later, Trent Kik would dish the puck to a speeding Jason Schemmel in the Stallions corner and Schemmel would complete the wrap-around just 1:49 into overtime to give the Phantoms the win and their first of the post-season. Game shots were not kept by Cedar Rock in the overtime period, therefore, the game will be considered by the final shot totals of the third period at 26-21 in favor of the Stallions. The Phantoms were ticketed with four minors for eight minutes and lost the services of Brian Doctor early in the third period as a result of his third penalty of the night. As for the Stallions, they completed the contest with just a single trip to the box for two minutes (coincidental with a Phantom call). The Phantoms played without the services of the Darren Skuse who was on a Phantom Public Relations trip in Florida. The Phantoms will return to post-season hockey on Sunday, January 9th when they tangle with Mungduhl in another must-win game for the Phantoms.
