The West Michigan Phantoms took full advantage of a Howies team in which several of its members were forced to play a double-header on Sunday. Despite Howies reaching the double digits in goal scoring in their Silver division contest just prior to the Phantom game, the Calvin College Kids were limited to just three goals in their 5:00pm clash against their longtime foe the Phantoms. For the true yellow shirts, five different goal scorers would light the lamp for the Phantoms enroute to a 8-3 victory during second week play. The Phantom offense would begin its eight goal waxing early in the opening period, as Jason Schemmel would set up Tim Czycyk just 37 seconds into the contest to put the Phantoms up 1-0. Roughly 1:30 later, the Phantoms would strike again as Gordie Anderson would be sent in on a breakaway scoring his third of the season and increasing the Phantom lead to 2-0. The lead would swell again late in the period as Tim Czycyk would register his third of the season on an unassisted goal with 5:03 left in the opening period to push the Phantoms into a 3-0 lead. That lead would continue to blossom and reach the four-goal plateau before the first intermission. The defensive line of Justin Calkins and Brian Doctor would capitalize with 1:27 remaining in the period, as a Calkins dish to Doctor on the left Phantom point would allow the host of Partyfest 2010 (Saturday, July 24th) to uncork a cannon to the back of the Howies goal for a commanding 4-0 lead. For Doctor, the goal would be scored on the Powerplay. In the second period, the Phantoms would push on as Gordie Anderson would net his second of the contest (assisted by Justin Calkins) to charge the Phantoms into an unprecedented 5-0 lead over Howies. However, the Calvin Kids would finally manage enough energy to begin their climb back into the game. With the Phantoms unable to clear the puck out of the zone, an innocent looking, low-flying blast from the point would manage to slip between the right pad of the Phantom goaltender and the post to find the back of the net and narrow the Phantom lead to 5-1. Howies would continue to press forward and their efforts would pay off 1:18 later, as a shot from the left slot would skim through traffic in front of the Phantom cage and again find the back of the net to bring Howies to within three at 5-2. In the third period, the Phantoms and Howies would exchange goals the opening two minutes to advance the score to 6-3. (Jason Schemmel would net the unassisted tally for the Phantoms in the exchange, as Schemmel would register his opening goal of the season). Phantom captain and veteran forward Trent Kik would cash in midway into the third period, as the Conklin resident would receive a dish from Chad Manning inside the Phantom zone and skate down center boulevard twisting and turning and stunning the Howie team as the Phantoms own #18 would cap off the highlight real goal with his opening goal of the season with 8:59 remaining in the period. Gordie Anderson would complete his hat-trick with his team leading fifth goal of the season with 21 seconds remaining in the contest, as Anderson would capture a powerplay goal to complete game scoring and give the Phantoms an impressive 8-3 victory over Howies. On the game, the Phantoms outshot Howies 28-22. The Phantom powerplay unit would be red-hot as the Phantoms would stage two goals on three extra-man-band opportunities. On the 96KBPS.com Internet Radio's Crime Watch, the Phantoms would ticketed on a single infraction (Gordie Anderson) for high-sticking, while Howies was sentenced to three penalties for six minutes. The Phantoms played without the services of Chris Wietfeldt. The team will return to action on Sunday, June 13 at the Cedar Rock Sports Plex. Plenty of great choice seats are available for Phantom Action.
