The West Michigan Phantoms were unable to contain the skill of Howies on Sunday, as the yellow and black fell to Howies by the final of 10-6 to lose the teams second consecutive championship game in the past two seasons.   Despite the ill-fated outcome, the bronze leagued Phantoms can be very proud of their Spring 2010 accomplishment, as the team did complete the 14-game season with an overall 9-4-0-1 record.  In the championship tilt against many former Calvin College alumni, the Phantoms would quickly be silenced as two Howies goals in the games opening 1:52 would put Howies on top 2-0.  The Phantoms would notch their opening goal of the championship duel with 4:59 remaining in the opening period, as Tim Czycyk would net an unassisted strike to narrow the contest to a 2-1 Howies lead after the opening 16 minutes.  The Phantoms would deadlock the score just 9 seconds into the second period, as Czycyk would unleash a quick wrist-shot past the Howies netminder to notch the second straight goal by the Phantoms.  The two-goal comeback by the Men of Phantom Nation would be short-lived, as Howies would follow their counterparts two-goal blitz with two of their own in the span 41 seconds to restore their two-goal grip at 4-2.  The Phantoms would continue to dig in and play their best against a former Silver leagued team and their efforts would pay off.  Brian Doctor would unleash a Twin Lake Laser that would deflect off Chad Mannings stick and into the back of the Howies net to bring the Phantoms back to within one at 4-3.  Minutes later, Howies would answer back as another Howies shot would beat the suffering Phantom netminder with 59 seconds remaining in the second period to put Howies on top 5-3 after two periods.  In the third period, Howies would climb into their first three-goal lead of the night just 1:20 into the third period.  That lead would be shrunk 57 seconds later as Jason Schemmel would notch his first of the championship game tilt to bring the Phantoms within two at 6-4.  Howies and the Phantoms would again exchange another pair of goals minutes later, as Jason Schemmel (assisted by Tim Vanoverloop) would again net the Phantom strike to advance the score 7-5.  Howies would then put the pressure on and take control of the duel as three goals in the span of 3:28 would lift Howies into a 10-5 lead.  The Phantoms Jason Schemmel  (assisted by Tim Vanoverloop) would complete the games scoring and complete his personal three-goal hat-trick with 1:15 remaining to notch the sixth Phantom goal against Howies.   Despite a great Phantom offensive showing, the teams defense would not be able to contain the highly skilled forwards of Howies and the Phantoms would fall in the championship game by the final of 10-6.  On the game, Howies outshot the Phantoms 31-25.  On the 96KBPS.com Internet Radios Crime Watch, the Phantoms would be ticketed on three minors for six minutes while Howies would be sentenced to a single minor for two minutes.  The Phantoms played without the services of Chris Wietfeldt , as Chris was again scratched for the second consecutive week due to work.   As mentioned, the Phantoms completed the Spring 2010 season with a great 9-4-0-1 mark.  The team will return to action on Sunday, May 23rd to kick-off the 28th season of Phantom Hockey and the Summer 2010 season.
