The West Michigan Phantom punched their ticket for the championship game on Sunday afternoon as the yellow and black downed the Roman Empire by the final of 4-2. The Phantom victory marked the third straight of the post-season, as the Phantoms will advance to play the Puck-Ups with an expected date of December 20th for the championship. On Sunday, the Phantoms climbed into a 1-0 lead early, as Tim Czycyk would feed off of a Nate Tyler pass just 2:06 into the contest to lift the yellow shirts into a 1-0. In the trailing minutes of the opening period the Phantoms would double-up their lead to 2-0, as Chuck McCloud would complete the tic-tac-toe play and rocket a rooftop rocket past Jeff Pacific for a 2-0 lead. The Phantom goal with just 57 seconds remaining in the period would be assisted by Tim Czycyk and Chad Manning. The opening period would see the Phantoms well in control, out shooting the Roman Empire 10-3. In the middle period, the Roman Empire would come back. Just 1:19 into the period, the Phantom's Dan Craveling would mishandle what appeared to be an easy chase to the left side of his goal. The Roman Empire would gain control behind the Phantom net and register a shot to narrow the contest to a 2-1 Phantom lead. Late in the period, the Roman Empire would strike with the equalizer as the white-shirts would score from the left circle to even the duel at 2-2. In the second period both teams would net 8 shots on goal. In the third period, the Phantoms would dig in and battle for a championship game appearance. Midway into the period, the Phantom's Tim Czycyk would tally his second of the night to lift the Phantoms into a 3-2 lead. Chad Manning would again set-up a Phantom goal, as the former Rivertown Sports' Main Street Pub forward would dish the puck to Czycyk with 7:47 remaining in the period. During the balance of the game, the Phantoms would fend off the Roman Empire and Trent Kik would finally give the Phantoms the bounce they were looking for with 15 seconds left. With the play deep inside the Phantom zone, Trent Kik would intercept a Roman Empire pass and the longtime Phantom would dump the puck the length of the rink. Despite the slow moving puck be chased by a Roman Empire defensemen, the puck would trickle across the goal line before being caught as the Phantoms would jump into a 4-2 lead. The final seconds would tick off of the scoreboard and the Phantoms would skate to a 4-2 victory. On the game, the Phantoms out shot the Roman 28-18. The victory advances the Phantoms to the championship game which is expected to take place on Sunday, December 20th.
