Following the conclusion of the ten game Winter 2009 regular season, the West Michigan Phantoms are very pleased and excited to again be able to add another successful mark to the now 26 consecutive seasons of Phantom Hockey.On Sunday, November 15, 2009, the Phantoms took claim to a 5-2 victory against the Sharkies to complete the regular season with a remarkable 8-2 record.The above .500 mark was the 22nd time in now 31 completed regular seasons and the seventh straight time in the past seven seasons (including Silver seasons) that the yellow and black have been above the .500 level.Moreover, the 8-2 regular season finish was the fourth straight above .500 mark for the bronze edition of the Phantoms in five seasons. The Phantoms completed the regular season tied with Team Chowder for the best record in the six team league.The Phantoms 16 point standings tally (along with Team Chowder's 16 points) was three points superior to the third place Puck-Up's 13, nine points superior to the fourth place Roman Empire's 7, eleven points superior than the Sharkie's 6 and 12 points superior to the Hawk's 4.The surge of Phantom Nation this season was much needed following a Spring 2009 season in which the Phantoms did not accomplish as much as they had hoped.During the most recent campaign, the Phantoms finished second best with 43 goals scored on the season.Those 43 red-light Phantom strikes were five fewer than Team Chowder's league leading 48 goals scored.The Puck-Ups were the third highest scoring unit with 38, followed by the Sharkies with 36, Roman Empire with 34 and the Hawks with 30.Since the Phantom Cedar Rock launch back in the Winter of 2006, the yellow and black have been among the top dogs on the defensive end.For the second straight season, the Phantoms again were the best defensive club in the league, as the defensive core surrendered only 27 goals against in ten games.Those 27 goals against also represent the fewest goals ever surrendered by a Phantom Bronze-leagued team at Cedar Rock in now five seasons.The Puck-Ups completed the regular season with the second best goals against mark of 34, followed by Team Chowder with 39, Roman Empire 41, Sharkies 41 and the Hawks with 48.As for individual Phantom numbers on the regular season, the Phantoms were gifted to have so many members play huge roles in the team's success. While a person's contribution to the team can not be summed up by goals and assists, unfortunately they are the easiest things to track.Tim Czycyk led the Phantoms with 15 goals on the season, followed by Trent Kik (11), Chad Manning (5), Justin Calkins (4), Chuck McCloud (4), Darren Skuse (2), Brian Doctor (1) and Matt Mead (1).As for assists, Tim Czycyk again took home the team best with 7, followed by Tim Vanoverloop (5), Trent Kik (4), Brain Doctor (4), Nate Tyler (3), Matt Mead (2), Chuck McCloud (2), Justin Calkins (2), Darren Skuse (1), Chad Manning (1).As for total points, Tim Czycyk lead the team with 22, followed by Trent Kik (15), Justin Calkins (6), Chuck McCloud (6), Chad Manning (6), Tim Vanoverloop (5), Brian Doctor (5), Nate Tyler (3), Matt Mead (3), Darren Skuse (3).On the 96KBPS.com Internet Radio's Penalty Minute board, Chuck McCloud led team minutes with 10, followed by Trent Kik (6), Nate Tyler (4), Chad Manning (4), Matt Mead (4), Justin Calkins (4), Brian Doctor (2), and Tim Vanoverloop (2).Phantom netminder Kevin Wootton turned aside 233 shots of the 260 he faced, good for a .897 save percentage.The Phantoms fired 277 shots towards their enemies during the ten game regular season and faced 260.The Phantoms were ticketed on 18 penalties for 36 total minutes, while the opposition was ticketed on 17 penalties for 42 total minutes.Overall, another great finish to the regular season for one of West Michigans premier franchises.
