The top seeded West Michigan Phantoms were able to keep their title as leaders of the six-team Bronze League on Sunday, as the yellow and back clawed their way back from down two goals to defeat the Hawks by the final of 4-3. The victory continues to lead the Phantoms atop the bronze league with an overall record of 6-1. The victory on Sunday marked the 22nd time in 31 Phantom seasons of hockey that the franchise will post an above .500 record following the regular season. Since the launch of the Phantoms at Cedar Rock Sports Plex during the Winter 2006 season, the former Rivertown Sports team has posted an above .500 mark following the 10-game regular season in 10 out of 12 seasons of hockey (Silver and Bronze combined). Behind the strength of a late Justin Calkin's strikes with 2:11 remaining in regulation, the Men of Phantom Nation were able to increase the team's current winning streak to three games overall and four straight games against the Hawks dating back to last season. The Phantom's opened the contest a little suspect and allowed the Hawks to charge into a 2-0 lead in the game's first 4:25. Following the early collapse, the Phantoms were able to settle down and restore dignity to the game. The Phantoms would manage to get on the board with 6:39 remaining in the opening period, as defenseman Tim Vanoverloop would head-man the puck to the Phantom's Nate Tyler and then on to Tim Czycyk, as the multi-season Phantom forward would net his first goal of the game and tie Trent Kik for the team lead in goals. Late in the first period with under a minute remaining on the clock, the Phantom's would complete their charge from down two goals. Tim Czycyk would again beat the Hawk's goaltender with just 26 seconds remaining in the period (assisted by Nate Tyler) to send both teams into the intermission tied at 2-2. For Czycyk, that would be his team-high ninth goal of the campaign. The Hawks were able to out shoot the Phantoms 7-6 in the opening period. In the second period, the Phantoms would take their first lead of the night early. Phantom forward Matt Mead would set-up Chad Manning for his second of the season just 2:34 into the period. The Phantom 3-2 lead would hold until the 11:21 mark of the second period, as a Hawk forward would be able to squeeze past two Phantom defenders and beat Phantom netminder Kevin Wootton to achieve the equalizer. As was displayed in the first intermission, both team's would again be tied after two periods of hockey. The Hawks again managed to out shot the Phantom's 10-8 in the middle stanza. In the third period, both team's would have chances to net the go-ahead goal, but no one would be able to light the red-light until late in the third period. The Phantom's Justin Calkin's would score his third goal of the season, as the Radio DJ would restore the Phantom lead and ultimately net the game-winner to give the Phantom's a 4-3 decision. In the third period, the Phantoms out shot the Hawks 9-7. On the game, the Hawks out shot the Phantoms 24-23. Our Internet sponsor's 96KBPS.com will not be very pleased with the lack of penalties during the contest as on the 96KBPS.com's Internet Radio's Crime Watch no penalties would be dealt to either club during the contest. The Phantom's skated without the services of Trent Kik (Griffin's game), Darren Skuse (vacation) and Dan Craveling (Halloween party). The Phantoms will return to Cedar Rock Sports Plex on November 1st at 7:00pm to take on the Puck-Ups.
