The West Michigan Phantoms continue to post positive gains in what appears to be a very competitive and skilled bronze division. On Sunday Night, the Phantoms used a Trent Kik second period goal to secure a 2-1 victory against Puck-Ups to improve to an unbeaten 2-0 record. Historically, the Phantoms and Puck-Ups have combined to create some of the closest and down-to-the-wire games in the Phantoms now 26 season history. Sunday night would again live up to that billing, as the Phantoms and Puck-Ups would battle until the final horn. The Phantoms would get on board early, as Darren Skuse would capitalize on a Brian Doctor redirect to give the Phantoms a 1-0 lead. The Phantom powerplay goal would be netted just 1:08 into the contest, as Darren Skuse stationed in front of the Puck-Up goal would be able to redirect the Doctor blast into the goal. Roughly ten minutes later, the Puck-Ups would be able to net pay-dirt on their own extra-man-band. With the Phantoms Trent Kik in the box on a slashing infraction, the Puck-Ups would take just 17 seconds to tie the contest at 1-1. Following the opening period, the Puck-Ups held a 11-10 shot advantage. In the second period, the neck-to-neck duel would continue. Mid-way into second period, the Phantoms would gain control of the puck. Four-year Phantom-pro Trent Kik would curtail in behind the Puck-Up goal and from deep in the right corner would just put the puck on net. The innocent looking and what appeared to be harmless attempt would catch the Puck-Up goaltender off guard, as the on-target puck would catch an opening and find the back of the net. The Trent Kik unassisted strike would occur with just 7:47 remaining in the middle period. The Puck-Ups would again outshoot the Phantoms in the second period, this time by a 8-5 margin. In the third period, the back-and-forth contest would continue. All game long, both the Phantom and Puck-Up forwards would be amazed and stunned at the same time by the goaltending duo of the Phantom's Kevin Wootton and the Puck-Up's Dave Sny. Glove saves, Blocker saves and two-pad-stacks would continue to keep the one-goal game heated until the end. Despite a total of 17 shots in the third period, the offense of neither team would be able to light the lamp. A Tim Vanoverloop dump-in with just seconds remaining would seal the win for the Phantoms by the final of 2-1. On the game, Puck-Ups outshot the Phantoms 26-25. On the 96KBPS.com Internet Radio's Crime Watch, the Phantoms were ticketed with three minors for six minutes, while the Puck-Ups would be banished on two minors for four minutes. The Phantoms played without the services of Dan Craveling, who was at Ford Field watching the Lions drop their eighteenth consecutive regular season game dating back to last season. Matt Mead remained scratched on the defensive end, as the multi-year Phantom defensemen remained in Mexico on business. Mead is expected to return to the Phantoms next week. As mentioned, the victory improved the Phantoms to 2-0 on the season. Despite registering only six goals in two games, the defensive end of the yellow and black is carrying the weight with a microscopic 1.00gaa. The Phantoms and the Sharkies currently sit as the only undefeated teams in the six-team bronze circuit.
