Woot Reflects on Life of the 'Silver' Phantoms

What a run myself and the 'Silver' team has enjoyed during the past seven seasons at Cedar Rock. I need to first say thank-you to every member of the Silver team who has allowed this team to enjoy huge success in Cedar Rock. When the team shifted play to Cedar on October 15, 2006, the team was at cross-roads. This change to Cedar Rock from Rivertown Sports was believed to secure the team for the next several seasons. Those 'several seasons' turned into seven seasons with the continued help and support from players such as Gordie Anderson, Casey Rosenberg, Trent Kik, Nate Tyler, Matt Zehr, Brad Zehr and Scott Vandonkelaar. The core group of players was able to recreate the legacy that the team enjoyed at Rivertown Sports the previous four years. The Phantoms continued to gain strength and reached the team's 'next wind' on March 30, 2008, when Chris Benedict was able to join the Phantoms after newly two years in the making. Under the leadership of Benny, the Phantoms, as well as myself, grew and learned much more about hockey than I thought would be possible from just a single player. I truly believe that Benny's arrival was responsible for the Phantoms continuing for the next year and a half. This past season, Brad Brooks and Norm Farr were an added boost to the yellow and black and were a huge success in the team's never-ending desire to win. The warmth of summer, compiled with the vacation season put a strain on the Phantoms this season, but the Silver team was able to press on and overcome the obstacles. Despite losing in the championship game, this season was another highlight of the Phantom's now 25 season history. I still can't believe that when the team began during the Fall 2002 season at Rivertown Sports, it has been able to remain active into the now the Spring/Summer 2009 season. The decision to finally call it quits in Silver has bothered me some, maybe that is because I'm not ready to admit that I am getting older and can not play as well as I once did.  In terms of other players, I know that they too are growing up. The Phantoms have witnessed the birth of Nate Tyler's first child, Trent Kik's first child, the marriage of Matt Zehr and other factors that proved that we are not as young as we once were. Since 2002, I have skated with players such as Gordie Anderson, Nate Tyler, Brad Zehr and others. While some of the players will remain active on other teams with myself, I will miss the opportunity to play with others that I have played with for so long. No one ever knows what the future has in store.  The past seven Silver seasons, as well as the previous 17 seasons at Rivertown has been a complete blast. Besides the Phantom 'core' group that I stated above, there are way too many people to mention that are deserving of recognition. While I know the friendships that have developed since 2002 will continue, it is the loss of the hockey aspect with so many players that I will miss. For 25 seasons, the Phantoms have been apart of hockey in West Michigan and while the 'Bronze' team will continue, the original Phantom team will not. Thanks to the members of the Silver Phantoms for allowing not only the Phantom team to continue, but for myself to remain as your goaltender. Thanks for the Memories!
