The lack of scoring continues to be a major issue for the defending bronze champions this season, as the Phantoms again were only able to net a pair of goals in their 6-2 defeat by the Falcons on Sunday. Sundays game marked the sixth game this season that the yellow and black have been unable to climb above the three goal mark, as the team continues to be faced with the title of the lowest scoring team in the bronze division. Following Sundays action, the Phantoms have netted only 25 goals in their eight games this season. On Sunday, the Phantoms would climb into a 1-0 lead midway into the opening period, as Tim Vanoverloop would notch an unassited strike to put the Phantoms on the board. That lead would hold until the opening minute of the second period, as the Falcons would notch their first goal of the contest just 59 seconds into the stanza to even the duel at 1-1. Less than two minutes later, the Falcons would mark into their first lead of the night at 2-1. Despite the Falcons outshooting the Phantoms 13-5 in the middle period, the Phantoms escaped trailing by just one goal after two periods. In the third period, the Phantoms would finally watch as the Falcon offensive, which has improved greatly during the past few games, would get their guns going and rattle off four goals in just the first nine minutes of the third period to climb into a 5-1 lead. Late in the period, the Falcons would notch another goal with just 1:54 remaining in the period to expand their lead to 6-1. With must of the energy falling from the Phantom sail early in the third, the yellow and black would manage enough strength to seize one more red-lighter before the horn sounded. Chad Manning and Patrick Ewerth would set up Chuck McCloud with under a minute remaining in the contest to notch the second goal of the contest for the Phantoms and the last of the game, as the Phantoms suffer their fourth defeat of the season. The victory lowers the Phantom record to below the .500 mark for the second time this season, as the Phantoms now are in a three-way tie for fourth place in the bronze league at a 3-4-0-1 record. On Sunday, the Phantom offense was completely inept, as the Phantoms were blasted by the Falcons in the shots on goal category by a 2-1 margin of 32-16. Despite the offensive struggles that continue to plague this Phantom team, the bright spot is that fact that even despite this six goal assault by the Falcons on Sunday, the Phantoms remain as the top defensive team in the league having surrendered a league best 24 goals against this season. The Phantoms will return to action on Sunday, June 21st at 8:00pm to tangle with the Junkyard Dawgs.
