6-8-09: Phantoms Fall Short in Defensive Duel; Lose 2-1 in Shoot-out

The West Michigan Phantoms fell just 3:36 short in their bid to achieve a victory against DC Byer on Sunday Night.  A late third period goal by DC Byer would propel the game to the overtime shoot-out, where the Phantoms would be unable to net a strike.  A lone strike by DC Byer on their first shot, would be enough to lift the team to a 2-1 decision in overtime.  Both goaltenders would stand strong in their respective goals during the entire contest.  Mid-way into the second period, it would be the Phantoms Chuck McCloud who would notch the first goal of the game (assisted by Travis McIntire) to lift the Phantoms into a slim 1-0 lead.  Following the first two periods, DC Byer held the advantage in shots against the Phantoms at 18-14.  In the third period, the Phantoms and DC Byer would continue their defensive dual for nearly 13 minutes before either team would be able to slip one past the goaltenders.  With DC Byer asserting pressure inside the Phantom zone, a shot from the top of the left-wing circle would manage to drift past the Phantom defensemen and over the goal of Kevin Wootton, tying the contest at 1-1 with just 3:36 remaining.  Despite a late Phantom penalty, the Phantom crew would fend off DC Byers extra-man-band and send the game to the overtime shoot-out.  In doing so, the Phantoms picked up one precious point in the standings.  In the shoot-out, the Phantoms Patrick Ewerth, Chuck McCloud and Nate Tyler would not be able to beat the DC Byer netminder on their breakaway bid.  For DC Byer, a wrist shot over the glove of Kevin Wootton in the Phantom goal on their first shot would be enough, as DC Byer wins the shoot-out 1-0 and wins the game 2-1.  The defeat of the Phantoms, lowers the Phantom record to 3-3-0-1 and keeps the Phantoms towards the lower tier of the six-team bronze league.  However, the Phantoms continue to play as the top defensive team in the six-team circuit surrendering a league-best 17 goals against through seven games.  The Phantom offense continues to experience some misfortune, as the yellow shirts have striked with just 23 goals in seven games, which ties them with DC Byer as the lowest scoring unit in the league.  This season, the Phantoms have been apart of five, one-goal games in which they have posted a record of 2-2-0-1.  The Phantoms will return to action next Sunday at 3:00pm to tangle with the Falcons.  Following the Phantom vs. Falcon contest next week, the team is encouraging members of both the Bronze and Silver Phantom squads to head to the Crazy House for dinner and drinks.  (Note: The Phantom-Silver team plays at 5:00pm, the Bronze team plays at 3:00pm.)  All members of the Phantom-Bronze team must have their entire league fees turned into Cedar Rock prior to puck-drop.  Every member will see an extra $5 increase in fees.  For a complete list of who knows money, check out the story below.
