One week after suffering a disappointing 5-3 loss to Howies, the defending Silver Champion West Michigan Phantoms returned and kicked-off a 10-0 victory over the Red Devils to even the team's post-season record at 1-1. The victory by the Phantoms is only the eighth mercy victory in the franchise's Cedar Rock history and the sixth by a Phantom Silver team. The Men of Phantom Nation used seven different marksman to register their 10 goal red-light performance and in doing so were able to incorporate everyone of their nine skaters with at least a point during the contest. The Phantom shut-out victory marks the first shut-out by Phantom netminder Kevin Wootton in 57 consecutive Phantom Silver games. The last Silver Phantom shut-out occured on January 14, 2007 when the Phantoms defeated the Rats. The Master of the Crease turned aside all 23 Red Devil shots en route to the Phantom's 15th shut-out in the team's 23 season history. The Phantom's began their double digit climb on the scoreboard 7:05 into the game, as the tenacious Dave Trahan set-up line-mate Chris Benedict to give the Phantoms the early 1-0 lead. The goal by team captain Benedict is his 32nd of the season and increases the East Kentwood Hockey coach's goal scoring streak to 21 straight games. The Phantoms would increase their lead to a pair of goals 2:29 later as Trent Kik would tally his 11th of the season (assisted by Casey Rosenberg and Gordie Anderson). Casey Rosenberg would put the Yellow Shirts up 3-0 minutes later, as Rosey would net his first of the contest. With 1:12 remaining in the period, Scott Vandonkelaar would increase the Phantom lead to four goals, as the Ferris State product would receive a set-up feed from Brad Zehr and Sean Wert. The Phantoms would go 0-1 on their lone power play in the opening period. The Phantoms managed to out shoot the Red Devils 15-7 in the opening period. Brad Zehr would get things going early in the second for the Phantoms, as the Muskegon Marksmen would tally his first of the game (assisted by Gordie Anderson) to give the Phantoms the 5-spot. Less than a minute later, Chris Benedict would stage his second of the game (assisted by Scott Vandonkelaar and Dave Trahan), followed by his third of the night less than a minute after that to complete his three-goal hat-trick (assisted by Scott Vandonkelaar). Dave Trahan would become involved on the goal scoring sheet with 5:20 remaining in the middle stanza as the Grand Valley student would stage his singleton to give the Phantoms an 8-0 lead. With just over 3:00 remaining in the second period, Matt Zehr would crack the score sheet as the Meat-Lovers-Line-Forward would connect on a Scott Vandonkelaar assist to set-up Sean Wert for his first goal of the night. The Phantoms would continue their dominance in the second period as the High-Octane Phantom Barn Blitz would out shoot the Devils 12-9. With the Phantoms in charge of a commanding and rather potent 9-0 lead, the third period would allow the Phantoms to 'toy-around' with their Silver division foe. The Phantoms would put on a passing clinic as the Phantom crew worked on puck movement and passing skills. Despite not registering a shot on goal for roughly a five minute span, the offensive and defensive members of the team continued their game control and drive. The Phantoms penalty kill would kill off a Trent Kik tripping infraction in the mid-stages of the period to keep the shut-out hopes alive for their favorite netminder. With time (and history) against the Phantoms on their shut-out quest, Scott Vandonkelaar would end the contest with 3:56 remaining as the Donkey would register his second of the night (assisted by Gordie Anderson and Chris Benedict) to give the Phantoms a 10-0 win. During the remaining portion of the game, Phantom All-Star and Fan Favorite Chris Benedict would switch to a white jersey and go up against his Phantoms, but, the Navyman would go empty handed in his efforts against his team. In the third period, the Red Devils out shot the Phantoms 7-3. On the game, the Phantoms out shot the Devils 30-23. On the Nauty's Penalty Minute Board, both team's were ticketed with a single minor on the night. The Phantoms skated without the services of Nate Tyler on the blueline. The Phantoms will return to action next Sunday in a must-win clash against the Missiles. A victory by the Phantoms will secure the team's return appearance to the championship game the following week. A defeat will erase the team's chances for a Repeat. As always, plenty of great choice seats are available for West Michigan Phantom Play-off Hockey.
