The West Michigan Phantoms closed the curtain on the regular season on Sunday, but it wasnt the curtain call that the team was hoping to achieve. As has become too familiar for the Yellow and Black this season, the opponent would score the games first goal of the contest 33 seconds into the tilt, but what is not familiar for the Phantoms is for the opponent to go on to also score the next three goals. As the Phantoms entered the first intermission, the defending Silver champions were on the losing end of a 4-0 decision and were out shot in the opening 16 minutes 11-7. The Phantoms have always been a team to battle back. In the second period, all it would take would be a fight inside the Phantom zone to get the troops humming. With the puck next to the door entering the rink, an unidentified Missile player and Phantom forward Gordie Anderson would become entangled in a battle for puck supremacy. With Anderson against the boards, the Missiles would use their body and another Missile forward in an effort to take control. After several seconds of jostling for control, Anderson would fall to the rink where the battle would continue. Finally after a knee to the head of Anderson and several poke checks towards the body of Anderson, the officials would blow the whistle. Within seconds of reaching his feet, Anderson would turn towards the Missile player he was engaged with and discuss the rather ill treatment he received along the boards. That discussion would lead to a fight between the two and then both teams would begin to take note as the referees tired their best to separate the two combatants. As if not understanding the rules of hockey, another Missile forward, Jared Reader, would enter the mix and appear to get involved with the altercation while the referees were still trying to break up the mess. After nearly five minutes, the penalties were handed out: Gordie Anderson would receiving 5 minutes for fighting and a game ejection, the unidentified Missiles player would receive two minutes for instigating, 5 minutes for fighting and a game ejection and Jared Reader would receive 2 minutes for 3rd man in and a game ejection. (Not surprising for Reader to be banished during a Cedar Rock game!) This excitement in the second period would be all it took for the Phantoms to begin their comeback. On the powerplay, Brad Zehr would launch his sixth goal of the season to put the Phantoms on the board. Less than a minute later, Casey Rosenberg would set up Chris Benedict to trim the Missile lead to two goals. The push would continue 1:17 later, as Chris Benedict would set up Sean Wert to Put the Phantoms Right Back In The Game trailing 3-4. All three of these Phantom goals would be scored in the span of 2:09 and despite trailing to the Missiles 0-4 after the first period, the Phantoms would end the second period trailing just 3-4. In the third period, the Phantoms would take just 43 seconds to erase their deficit. Brad Zehr would set-up Chris Benedict for his second goal of the night to tie the game 4-4. Chris Benedict would keep the show going 1:12 later, as the former Old Dominion Head Coach would seize his league-leading 31st goal of the season to put the Phantoms on top for the first time in the contest at 5-4. It would appear the Phantoms were back on track, however, as quickly as the Phantom goals came, the Missiles would tally two goals in the span of 28 seconds to regain the lead at 6-5 with 8:00 remaining in the game. While the two-goal-blitz ended the Phantom rally, as displayed when the troop was down four goals, the team can battle back. With 6:43 remaining in the game, Chris Benedict would capture point number 41 on the season, as Benny would set up Sean Wert for his second goal of the night and tie the game 6-6. Despite two Phantom penalties in the third period, the Missiles would not be able to topple the Phantoms on their extra-man-band and after three periods of hockey both teams would be tied at 6-6. For the second time this season, the Phantoms would enter the MoJos Dueling Piano Shoot-out Duel. Both the Phantoms and Missiles would be held scoreless during the first three rounds of the breakaway contest, but both teams would capture goals in the fourth round to end up deadlocked at 7-7. Scott Vandonkelaar would be the lone Phantom to net a shoot-out goal for the Men of Phantom Nation. On the game, the Missiles out shot the Phantoms 29-24. On the Nautys Penalty Minute Board, the Missiles were ticketed with 3 penalties and two game ejections for 9 minutes, while the Phantoms were assessed 6 penalties and a game ejection for 15 minutes.
