The West Michigan Phantoms used a Sean Wert goal in the final minutes of the opening period to clinch what would become the game winning goal on Sunday, as the Phantoms cruised to an 11-2 victory over the Missiles. The victory was a very important moral victory to the club, as the team was able to shrug off a disappointing 8-6 loss to the same Missile team three games ago. The Phantoms now regain the season-series lead at 2-1. The Men of Yellow Nation took 5:37 to get the party started as Trent Kik netted his fifth of the season to put the defending champions on the board. Near the juncture of the mid-mark of the opening period, the Phantoms took what many on the team thought would be a huge blow as Chris Benedict would be injured on a high-sticking infraction by a Missile player. A large pool of blood would quickly stop play as the two-season Phantom all-star would fall to the ground with streams of blood flowing from the nose. Benedict would leave the bench area to seek sniffer repair. On the ensuing four-minute power-play, the Phantoms would take nearly the entire span to capture a power-play goal and increase the lead to 2-0. The Sean Wert strike would be assisted by Chris Benedict who returned to the game nearly three minutes following the injury with what appeared to a tampon hanging from each nostril. The Phantoms would again capture a power play goal on another Missile penalty 1:42 later as Sean Wert would capture his second of the night to increase the lead to 3-0. The Phantoms would close out the opening period in sole control of a 3-0 lead. In that opening period, the Phantoms out shot the Missiles 9-7. In the second period, the Phantoms would take only 59 seconds to crack the scoring page as Trent Kik would connect on his second of the night (assisted by Gordie Anderson) to expand the lead to 4-0. The Missiles would end the shut-out streak for the Phantom netminder at the 3:48 mark of the period, as the Missiles would capitalize on a Scott Vandonkelaar tripping penalty. The Phantoms would real off three more goals late in the second period to close out the period with a 7-1 lead. Brad Zehr and a pair from Chris Benedict would be the marksmen for the Phantoms in that three-goal assault in the final 5:24 of the period. The Phantoms managed to again out shoot the Missiles in the period, 8-7. In the third period the Phantoms would continue to notch numbers on the board as the team would record three goals in the first 8:40 to increase the monsoon to 10-1. Casey Rosenberg would lead the Phantom's third period charge with his third of the season. Chris Benedict would notch goals number three and number four on the night following the Rosenberg period opening goal. The Missiles would break the Phantom scoring streak with 4:42 remaining in the contest to narrow the lead to 10-2. However, the Phantoms would get the last laugh as Brad Zehr would capitalize on a break-away opportunity with just five seconds remaining in the contest to seal the deal for the Phantoms. Unlike the first two periods, the Missiles actually out shot the Phantoms 12-8 in the third period. For the game, the Missiles out shot the Phantoms 26-25. On the Nauty's Penalty Minute Board, the Phantoms were ticketed for three minors for six minutes, while the Missiles finished the tilt with four minors totaling 10 minutes. The Phantoms played without the services of Matt Zehr who was recovering from his bachelor party the night before and Dave Trahan who was sidelined at work. The win improves the Phantom season record to 4-2-0-1. The team will return to action next Sunday to tangle with arch-rival Howies.
