The West Michigan Phantoms were able to truncate the team's winless skid on Sunday, as the team blasted the Red Devils to the tune of 12-2. The victory by the Phantoms marked the second straight game this season that the Yellow and Black were able to snatch victory from the mouths of the Red Devils. Dating back to last season, the Men of Phantom Nation have been victorious in five of the team's last five meetings against the Devils. The 12 goals by the defending champions tonight marked the first time this season that the team has recorded 12 strikes on the scoreboard. The last time that the Phantoms recorded 12 goals in a game was back on May 11th when the boys earned a 12-2 win against the Missiles. Tonight's contest marked the first time this season that the Phantoms skated with 10 skaters. Citing some minor issues earlier in the season, the team decided this week to increase the roster to 10 skaters for as many of the remaining games as possible. In the Sunday Battle from the Cornfield in Cedar, the Phantoms would open the games scoring 1:10 into the contest as Team 'K'aptian Chris Benedict would tally his team leading 13th goal of the season (assisted by Dave Trahan) to put the Phantoms on the board early. Despite the Red Devil goaltender playing decent during the start of the period, the Phantoms would manage to increase their lead to 3-0 by the end of the first period of play. With 4:32 remaining in the stanza, Chris Benedict would knock home his second of the night (assisted by Scott Vandonkelaar) to give the Phantom some insurance on the board. The Phantom's would complete the late opening period assault 1:52 later as Dave Trahan would tally his 4th goal in two games this season (assisted by Nate Tyler and Trent Kik) to secure a three goal grip for the Phantoms after the opening 16 minutes. From the start of the second period, the Phantoms would continue where they left off in the first. Two quick strikes in the first :50 seconds of the period would expand the lead to five. Sean Wert began the period with a goal 16 seconds in (assisted by Casey Rosenberg) and Casey Rosenberg would strike with his first goal of the season 33 seconds later (assisted by Scott Vandonkelaar) to give the Phantom the 5-spot 17:50 into the contest. The lead would swell to six with a Chris Benedict goal (assisted by Dave Trahan and Nate Tyler) to complete the hat-trick for the 'K'aptain. Gordie Anderson would do his girlfriend proud minutes later as the Phantom #87 star would capitalize on his second of season (assisted by Brad Zehr and Nate Tyler) with 9:55 remaining in the period to catapult the Phantoms into a 7-0 lead. The on-onslaught would continue two minutes later as Dave Trahan would tally his second of the night (assisted by Chris Benedict and Scott Vandonkelaar) to give the defending champions a 8-0 lead. However, the Red Devils would manage to destroy the shut-out hopes for the Phantom netminder with 4:20 remaining in the period, as the Devils would capitalize on a defensive breakdown which would lead to garbage goal trimming the lead to 8-1. In the third period, the Phantom's newest star Dave Trahan would do just what his Phantom idol did in the second, complete the hat-trick. Just 2:40 into the period, Trahan would receive a Scott Vandonkelaar to Chris Benedict pass, as the former Phantom would record his second hat-trick of the season in just two games giving the Phantoms a 9-1 lead. With the Phantom's Casey Rosenberg in the Nauty's Penalty Box on a hooking infraction, the Red Devils would score their second of the night to trim the game to 9-2. The Phantom's would restore their eight goal grip 1:19 later as Dave Trahan would Supersize his hat-trick to four goals (assisted by Chris Benedict). With the Phantoms in charge of a 10-2 lead, the team would not be done. With 3:59 remaining in the game, Trent Kik would set up Gordie Anderson for his second of the night putting 'Double One's' on the scoreboard for the Phantoms. Just over a minute later with the Phantoms on the powerplay, Casey Rosenberg would tally his second his night (assisted by Sean Wert) to complete the Sunday battle at the Cornfield. On the game, the Phantoms out shot the Red Devils 37-18. On the Nauty's Penalty Minute Board, the Phantoms were ticketed with two minutes for four minutes, while the Red Devils were ticketed with a single infraction for two minutes. As mentioned, Dave Trahan lead the Phantoms in scoring (sorry Benny) with four goals on the night. The return of Dave Trahan for this season, along with the arrival of Sean Wert to a Phantom jersey have been key additions to the team who is not only looking to be competitive this season, but seasons down the road. The Phantoms will return to action next Sunday to tangle with the Missiles.
