The Phantoms would play a terrific first and second period against the defending Bronze champion Hawks on Sunday, however, the Phantoms would watch as the third period would continue to be the club's downfall as the Phantom would surrender five goals in the closing 9:45 to fall 7-4. The Phantoms would open the games scoring just 1:30 into the contest as Jason Schemmel would set up Tim Czyzyk to give the Phantoms an early 1-0 lead. However, 44 seconds following the Czyzyk strike, a deflection by the Phantom defense would result in a stunning Hawk goal to tie the contest at 1-1. Minutes later, the Hawks would seize their first lead of the night on an odd-rush into Phantom territory to climb into a 2-1 lead. The Phantoms would answer back with 6:38 remaining in the opening period as Tim Czyzyk would tally his second of the night to tie the game at 2-2. Both the Phantoms and Hawks would go toe-to-toe during the balance of the opening period, yet the opening 16 minutes would conclude deadlocked at 2-2. The Hawks managed to out shoot the Phantoms 9-6 in the opening period. In the middle stanza, the Phantoms would restore their lead at 3-2 as Tim Czyzyk would complete the hat-trick on his third goal of the night. The Phantoms would climb into their biggest lead of the night roughly four minutes later as Jason Schemmel would receive a pass from Justin Calkins to expand the Phantom lead to 4-2. The Phantoms would close out the middle stanza with a two goal lead at 4-2. The Phantoms out shot the Hawks 11-9 in the second period. In the third period, the Phantoms strong work ethic would suffer another catastrophic failure. The meltdown would begin to take shape with 9:55 remaining in the period as the Phantoms would be ticketed on a unnecessary penalty giving the Hawks a power-play. That power play would need only 46 seconds to convert as the Hawks would narrow the game to one goal at 4-3. During last season and the first game this season the Phantoms have trouble preserving leads. Tonight would be no exception. The Hawks would achieve the tying goal with 5:35 remaining in the contest and then capture the ultimate game-winning strike 1:51 to seize a 5-4 lead. The Hawks would gain some insurance with their fourth third-period goal of the night giving the black shirts a 6-4 lead. The defending Bronze champions would capture an empty net goal with 24 seconds left in the game to seal a 7-4 verdict over the Phantoms. In the third period alone, the Hawks out shot the Phantoms 15-5 and completed the contest out shooting the Phantoms 33-22. On the Nauty's Penalty Minute Board, both teams were ticketed with three minors for six minutes. For the Phantoms, the team saw Matt Mead and Chad Manning make their Summer 2008 debut. The Phantoms will be looking to put a stop to the team's third period meltdowns in their next contest at Cedar Rock.
