The Phantoms Bronze team continues to remain as the only unbeaten team in the 11-team circuit, as the Phantoms capped a 4-4 tie against Hunting Deadlines on Sunday. The Men of Phantom Nation opened the games scoring 3:59 seconds into the game as Brett Smith set up Jason Schemmel to give the Yellow Shirts a 1-0 lead. Minutes later Brett Smith with a strike with 8:37 remaining in the opening period on a Mike Devore set-up to expand the Phantom lead to 2-0. However, Hunting Deadlines would manage to trim into the Phantom lead minutes later as Blake Edwards would find the back of the Phantom net with 5:41 remaining to bring Hunting Deadlines to within one goal. During the middle stanza, only a single goal would be scored and that goal would be delivered by Joel Apol of Hunting Deadlines 5:17 into the second period. The Hunting Deadlines strike would complete the two-goal comeback by the Black Shirts and tie the contest at 2-2. During the second period the Phantoms would lack the desire and energy that has been displayed during the first four games of the season. The lack of the knack on the Phantom scoring attack in the second period would largely be a result of very few (if any) decent scoring chances in the period. As the third period began, the Phantoms would strike a mere 2:00 into the period as Jason Schemmel would set up Steve Downing for the go-ahead goal which re-gained the Phantom lead at 3-2. Brett Smith would restore the once two-goal Phantom lead 1:56 later at 4-2 as Mike Devore set up his neighbor for his second of the contest. With the Phantoms fighting back to regain a two-goal lead one would think that the team would have learned from their mistakes of not only earlier in this game, but also of the teams first game of the season when they watched a multi-goal lead slip away in the third. However, that lesson appears to be a hard lesson to understand, as Hunting Deadlines would strike with a pair of goals 1:11 apart to tie the game at 4-4. Despite the Phantoms outshooting Hunting Deadlines 17-15 in the third period, only a few quality scoring changes would develop with most of the pucks being shot right at the Hunting Deadlines netminder. During the shoot-out, each team would tally two goals (Mike Devore and Patrick Ewerth for the Phantoms) to complete the contest tied at 4-4. Earlier in the night, the Phantoms parent club capped a 7-6 victory over Howies in the shoot-out and during that shoot-out the Phantom netminder extended his shoot-out streak to 10 unbeaten games. During the Bronze game, Wootton extended it one more game to 11 straight unbeaten games in the shoot-out. Despite the tie, the Phantoms remain as the only unbeaten team in the league at a record of 3-0-2. The eight points for the Phantoms ties them for the overall league lead. During the contest, the Phantoms outshot Hunting Deadlines 42-36. Both clubs registered three minors for six minutes in penalties. The Phantoms were without the services of Brent Vandonkelaar. The team will return to action to face-off against last seasons runners up. The Phantom vs. Sawbone clash will take place at 8:00pm.
