The West Michigan Jr. Phantoms continued their all-out assault towards the top spot in the Bronze division on Sunday as the Phantoms etched yet another two points into their standings climb in a 6-1 victory over Black and Gold. The Jr. Phantoms, who were paying tribute to the teams predecessor Viper and Komet franchises during the teams first ever Heritage Night, used a three goal outburst in the opening period to spearhead the victory. For the Men of Phantom Nation it took just 4:52 to get onto the board as Jason Schemmel would set up Steve Downing for the first goal of the night. A mere 2:08 later, Tim Vanoverloop would strike off a Keith Mooreman sweet dish feed to double the Phantom lead to 2-0. Late in the opening period with 1:57 remaining, Brett Smith would continue the all-out assault as the veteran Phantom player would receive the puck from Justin Calkins and increase the Phantom lead to 3-0. In the second period, the Phantoms again continued to press forward and that pressure would pay off 1:07 into the period, as Brent Vandonkelear would set up Steve Downing for his second of the night and a commanding 4-0 lead on the scoreboard. The Jr. Phantoms and the Lazerskate Sports Plex would then be treated to a history making and monumental goal late in the middle stanza. With Black & Gold pressuring deep inside the left corner of the Phantom zone, a Black & Gold offensive player would pass the puck back to the point where his defensive player was located. On the receiving end of the point pass, the Black & Gold defensive player would fumble with the puck and the Phantoms Darren Skuse would ultimately lift the stick of the Black & Gold player and gain control of the puck. With lightning exiting from his skate blades, Darren Skuse would rocket in on a breakaway towards the Black & Gold netminder and riffle the black biscuit through the legs of the netminder for his first ever Phantom goal. The Skuse strike would be executed with 1:11 remaining in the second period and lifted the Phantoms to a 5-0 lead. Early in the third period, the Phantoms Brent Vandonkelear would be called for a trip and a rough which would give Black & Gold a 4:00 power-play. The Phantom penalty killing unit would complete the first two minutes of Brents trip to the sin-bin masterfully, but 30 seconds into the second penalty Black & Gold would manage to inch the puck under the sprawled out Phantom netminder and put Black & Gold on the board. The power-play strike by Black & Gold would truncate and negate the Phantoms shut-out streak at 83:47. Minutes after the Black & Gold strike, the Phantoms Jason Schemmel would regain a five-goal cushion for the Phantoms and conclude the scoring during the contest. The 6-1 victory by the Phantoms, improves the teams record to 2-0-1. On the Nautys penalty minute clock, the Phantoms were ticketed for 4 minors for 8 minutes and Black & Gold was called on 2 minors for 4 minutes. The Phantoms outshot the opponent 35-18. The Phantoms will return to action in two weeks to take on last season champions the Sharkies at 9:00pm.
