The West Michigan Phantoms accomplished something that the team has never accomplished prior to this season at Lazerskate; won their first game. In the two previous season opening games, the Phantoms were defeated. Yet, on the team's 20th Anniversary Season Opener, the Yellow and Black managed to triumph over the Revolution 10-5. With the exception of the second period, the Phantoms displayed a great effort and that is proven by the fact that every player that was dressed for the Phantoms, with the exception of the goaltender, tallied at least a single point during the contest. Gordie Anderson, the Muskegon native and long-time Phantom offensemen lead the squad with three goals on the night and a single assist. Phantom newcomer Scott VanDonkelaar was brilliant in his return to his home-town team, recording four points on a goal and three assists. The Phantoms were whistled for six minor penalties for 12 minutes, while the Revolution were ticketed with 5 minor penalties for 10 minutes. The Phantoms were outshot by the Revolution 29-35. The victory will go down as the 149th in team history, as the Phantoms are a mere one victory away from 150 franchise wins. In other opening night news, the Red Devils defeated Howie's Hockey Tape 10-4. That would become Howie's first loss in 15 games. During the final minute of that contest, several players would come in contact with each other as a small brawl would take place in the defensive zone of the Red Devils. And to think...It's usually the Phantoms that are involved with on-rink scrums! The Phantoms will return to action on Sunday at 4:00pm as they take on Howie's. See Everyone at Game Time!
