The extra frame of hockey is not treating the Phantoms very well this season, as the team dropped its second shoot-out of the season on Sunday, falling to DeBoer by the final of 6-5 in the sixth round of the breakaway session. The loss, which is the second shoot-out loss to Deboer this season, lowers the Phantom record to 5-3-2 this season at Walker Ice & Fitness, but still keeps the Phantoms in fifth place and just six points out of the top-spot. Despite a goal by the Phantom's Kyle Clark in the opening minutes of the game and Sean Wert late in the opening period, the Phantoms and DeBoer would complete a rather see-saw battle throughout the duel to keep both teams in the hunt for the victory. Matt Zehr would strike with just 3:54 remaining in regulation to deadlock the duel and ultimately force the game to the shoot-out. Despite the Phantoms registering a lone strike by Casey Rosenberg, DeBoer would manage to back-hand the puck past the Phantom netminder in the sixth round to break the 1-1 tie and capture the shoot-out 2-1 and the game 6-5. During the contest, the Phatnoms would receive strikes from the mentioned Kyle Clark and Sean Wert, while Nate Skoboda, Matt Zehr and another tally by Clark would mount the five goal regulation output by the Phantoms. Trent Kik, Matt Mead, Kyle Clark, Sean Wert and Matt Zehr would each stage helpers during the contest. The Phantoms would be ticketed on six minors for twelve minutes in penalties throughout the contest, while DeBoer would be banished on four minors for a total of eight minutes. The Phantoms played without the services of Brad Zehr and Jason Schemmel. The team will return to action on Sunday, January 15th to battle Pioneer at 7:10pm.
