It was during the fifth inning of Game 3 of the 1932 World Series, held on October 1, 1932 at Wrigley Field in Chicago that the story of Babe Ruths Called Shot created a stir across the sports world.  During the at-bat, Ruth made a pointing gesture, which existing film confirms, but the exact nature of his gesture is ambiguous. Although neither fully confirmed nor refuted, the story goes that Ruth pointed to the center field bleachers during the at-bat. It was allegedly a declaration that he would hit a home run to this part of the park. On the next pitch, Ruth hit a home run to center field.  On Sunday night, the West Michigan Phantoms kicked off the teams unprecedented 32nd season of hockey operations and allowed seven players to begin their first-ever stint for the Phantoms on ice.  For Gordie Anderson, it was as if he stole a page from Babe Ruths playbook and was able to overcome large heckling by not the opposing team like Babe Ruth, but from his own teammates in the locker prior to the game.  For the longtime veteran of Phantom Hockey, Sundays game marked the first time in his 30 years of life that Anderson would play in an organized ice hockey game.  While receiving a basic rundown of the rule differences and receiving help from Casey Rosenberg to suit up, Gordie made mention that he would either suck (at ice) or manage to play well and joked that he would light the lamp in his inaugural ice game.  As mentioned, the Phantoms would enter the rink on Sunday and begin the teams 32nd season of hockey and take part in just the teams second season ever on ice.  With nearly half of the Phantom roster being new to Walker Ice and Fitness, the locker room was filled with nervous players and anticipation to kick off season #32 against an unknown opponent in Bobs Bar.  The Phantoms would weather the first eight minutes of the opening period without any issues as the Yellow & Black began to get use to the new surroundings and reunite with players who havent played with each other in years.  However, just over four minutes remaining in the opening period, the Phantoms defensive unit would suffer a short-circuit in their own end which would create several scrambles in the Phantom defensive zone.   The team would not be able to return to calm waters until Bobs Bar would climb into the games first lead of the night and break the 0-0 score.  With a dysfunctioned band of Yellow brothers scrambling for control, the defensive unit would leave a Bobs Bar forward wide open near the mouth of the Phantom cage and he would be able to complete a centering attempt and beat the Phantom netminder Kevin Wootton for a 1-0 Bobs Bar lead.  Less than a minute later, the Phantoms Nate Skoboda would be sentenced on the teams first minor penalty of the season, creating an extra-man-band opportunity for the home-siders.  Despite some chances to double their lead by a pair, the Phantom penalty killing unit would be masterful and deny the Bar-Boys any cushion in their lead.  The Phantoms would escape the opening period down by just a singleton entering the middle stanza in the west Grand Rapids suburb of Walker.  Just over four minutes into the second period, the Phantoms would break out of their zone along their right wing boards and after reaching the red line, would dump the puck deep into the Bobs Bar zone.  Bobs goaltender would attempt to redirect the puck up the boards from his left wing corner, where the Phantoms Gordie Anderson would gain control and shoot the puck into the open net to mount the first Phantom goal of the 32nd season and capture his first-ever Ice Hockey goal.  Late in the second period, the Phantoms would begin to find their grove and display a full assault of Phantom pressure deep inside the Bobs Bar zone.  That pressure would pay off in the final seconds of the second period, as Jason Schemmel would set up Matt Mead to give the Phantoms their first lead of the night with just eight seconds remaining in the middle period and a lead entering the third period.  That Phantom lead would be short-lived, as just 12 seconds into the third period, Bobs Bar would be able to split the Phantom defense and stage the puck past the glove of the Phantom netminder to deadlock the duel at 2-2.  However, the Men of Phantom Nation would bounce right back as Nate Skoboda would restore the lead with an unassisted tally 44 seconds later to give the Phantoms a 3-2 lead with twelve minutes remaining in the third period.  The Phantom penalty killing unit would be challenged with 9:35 remaining in the period as Casey Rosenberg would be banished on a two-minute minor allowing Bobs Bar to experience their second powerplay of the evening.  Just like their first opportunity in the opening period, Bobs Bar would be denied on their second attempt as the Phantom penalty killing unit would fend off the disadvantage and return to full strength.  With time running out, Bobs Bar would begin to turn up the heat on the Phantoms and with just 2:58 remaining in the period would be given a perfect opportunity to attain the equalizer as the Phantoms Keith Moorman would be sentenced with a two-minute-trip to the sin-bin.  The Phantom penalty killing unit, helped by some electrifying saves by their goaltender, would for the third time of the game fend off the opposition power-play to return to full strength with just 58 seconds remaining in the game.  Despite a last-ditch effort to pull their goaltender for an extra-attacker, Bobs Bar would not be able to net the equalizer and the Phantoms would capture the victory in their first game of the teams 32nd season.  On the game, the Phantoms would be sentenced on three minors for six minutes and Bobs Bar would be guilty of one minor for two minutes.  The Phantoms would skate without the services of Trent Kik and Andy Raymond.  Casey Rosenberg and Nate Skoboda received call-up duties for the Phantoms during the season opener.  The Phantoms will return to action on Sunday, October 23rd to battle the two-time defending league champion Auto-Fix-It at 10:30pm.
