The Yellow & Black were able to capture a very important two points in the standings on Sunday and in the process remain in the drivers seat for the teams quest to complete Fall 2011 regular season in second place.Spearheaded by a three goal performance from both Chris Benedict and Chad Manning, the West Michigan Phantoms were able to take claim to an 8-4 victory against Team Jager in a game that many considered very boring.Following a rather physical and penalty filled end to the contest on August 7 when these two teams clashed, many were expecting a good ole fashion Phantom Fight Night during this most recent clash, however, despite the Phantoms ready to dance, Team Jager and their very reduced bench would not show any ounce of hositily against the rather superior Phantoms until the final minute of the game which came as expected news to the Phantoms. The Phantoms would break open the contest 7:19 into the opening frame as Brad Zehr would set up Chris Benedict for his fifth of the season to push the Phantoms into a 1-0 lead.Eric Stubig, who returned to the Phantom lineup following several weeks off due to work, was able to strike 1:08 later (assisted by Tim Czycyk) to net his second of his Phantom career and cast the Phantoms into a 2-0 lead.Late in the opening period, Phantom Ice product and former member of the Phantoms Silver Division In-Line team Brad Zehr would strike with his first of two on the night (unassisted) to bring the Phantoms into the first intermission leading 3-0.The opening period by the Phantoms witnessed the teams offense stage three, but it was the teams penalty killing that made the difference as the Yellow Crusuders were able to kill off all four minor penalties that allowed Team Jager to skate with the extra-man-advantage during the opening frame. In the second period, the Phantoms would increase their lead to four goals, as Chris Benedict with the help of Gordie Anderson and Brad Zehr would revolve the red goal light just 3:26 into the second period.Team Jager would manage to finally achieve a strike past 31-season Phantom netminder Kevin Wootton 1:42 following the Benedict strike to put Team Jager on the board trailing 4-1.Late in the second period, Chad Manning would increase his team leading goal scoring tally by two goals, as Manning would net two goals 42 seconds apart (Tim Czycyk assisted on first, Brad Zehr on second) to give the Phantoms a 6-1 lead after the opening 32 minutes. For Chad Manning, those two goals would be his 12th and 13th goals of the season for his red-hot Phantom forward.Just 1:16 into the third period, Chris Benedict would stage his third of the game (assisted by Eric Stubig) to net the newly named Business Delvelopment Executive with the Muskegon Lumberjacks his seventh of the season.Team Jager would manage to claw back into the game minutes later with their second of the contest, only to witness the Phantoms Chad Manning strike with a goal of his own to complete the hat-trick and net his 14th of the season to regain the Phantom six goal lead at 8-2.During the balance of the game, Team Jager would cap two more goals to advance to within four goals of the Phantoms, however, that would be as close as they would come as the Phantoms would go on to the 8-4 victory and register their fifth victory of the season and second against Team Jager. On the game, the Phantoms out shot Team Jager 18-13.The Phantoms would be ticketed on nine minors for 18 minutes, while Team Jager would be sentenced on four minors for eight minutes. The Phantoms skated without the services of Brian Doctor (injury) and John Dykehouse (injury) who remain on the teams IR.It is noteworthy to mention that Sundays game against Team Jager marked the first time that the Phantoms were able to skate with a full-10-man roster since the second game of the season.
