The West Michigan Phantoms are pushing forward with plans to shift all franchise operations to Walker Ice & Fitness.Over the past five weeks, the Phantoms have been very busy behind the scenes laying out the foundation and securing support for the team to enter the Sunday league at Walker Ice & Fitness this September. As of mid-August, the Phantoms are confident that they have overcome enough hurdles and obstacles that will allow the team to form a Sunday group at Walker Ice & Fitness. It is always hard when changes are forced to take place, especially when it affects both Phantoms teams, said Team General Manager Kevin Wootton.Following the news of Cedar Rock converting over to ice and Walker Ice & Fitness moving their Tuesday league to Sunday, the Phantoms were brought to a crossroad. No matter what direction we as a team choose, the team would lose players that have been involved with the Phantoms for a long time, said Wootton. After a long and hard thought decision, I feel that the Sunday Night Walker league is the best value and best option available for the Phantoms, Wootton said.As of mid-August, the Phantoms have two options for rosters for the Sunday Night league at Walker Ice & Fitness: Option One (which is filled) is to keep the same core players that currently play on the teams Ice Team with a few added people, Option Two (2-4 open spots) is to keep roughly half of the Ice team together and fill out the 13-man roster with new players. As of August 19th, nearly five current Phantom Ice players remain uncertain as to their direction for next season due to the possibility of another teams idea to play in the Cedar Rocks Sunday league. With the current Ice season down to its final two games, the Phantoms will not hold back much longer as the Phantoms will be forced to go to Option 2 no later than Tuesday, August 23rd.Change brings with it good news and bad news, however, with our deadline very close, the Phantoms must do what it takes to get a roster in place and practices scheduled. The Phantoms have been in contact with Walker Ice & Fitness to best work with the team during the roughly four weeks in which the teams current inline hockey and next seasons Ice league will overlap.Walker Ice & Fitness has agreed to work with the Phantoms during this process to make this transition as smooth as possible. The team has also not ruled out an option of creating an in-line team (weekday) at Rivertown Sports for their Winter League that starts in October, however, the team will not begin that task until the Sunday Ice team is up, running and completed. More information will be available this week, including next seasons Ice Roster. We are expecting 2-3 spots to still be open for Phantom Ice next season, if you are interested, please contact Kevin Wootton at 231-638-1396 ASAP.
