The West Michigan Phantoms successfully put an end to the teams historic 30th season of hockey Sunday evening at the Cedar Rock Sports Plex in Cedar Springs.Spearheaded by a three-goal hat-trick performance from Chad Manning, the Men of Phantom Nation were able to dispose of Team Jager by the final of 8-3 and in the process, would mark their second straight victory against the blue shirts to take claim to a 2-1 season series.The victory marked the eighth of the season by the Phantoms and closed out the highly mentioned 30th season of Phantom Hockey with an overall record of 8-4-0-2.On Sunday the Phantoms quickly began their quest to close out the Spring 2011 season with a bang.Brian Doctor would open the scoring just 1:16 into the contest, as the Muskegon native would stage his first goal of the season off a Trent Kik set-up dish to put the Phantoms in front of a 1-0 lead.Roughly two minutes later, Tim Czycyk (assisted by Chad Manning) and Chad Manning (unassisted) would stage a pair of Phantom goals just 32 seconds apart to leapfrog the Phantom lead to 3-0.Trent Kik would keep the Phantom firepower hot and heavy, as the Phantom Co-Captain would push his goal scoring streak to four games with his tenth of the season to push the Phantom uprising to a 4-0 lead.However, two deflections off the stick of Phantom defensemen Jason Schemmel in the final minute of the opening period would put Team Jager back into the contest entering the first intermission with the Phantoms up 4-2.The Phantoms blasted Team Jager in the shot margin in the opening frame 12-6. In the second period, the Phantoms would begin to restore their four goal grip and Tim Czycyk would lead the Phantom charge with his fourth of the season just 5:38 into the period (unassisted) to lift the Phantoms into a 5-2 lead.Chad Manning would strike with just 1:19 remaining in the middle stanza with his seventh of the season (assisted by Tim Czycyk) to give the Phantoms a 6-2 advantage through two periods of play.In the third period, Team Jager would trim the deficit back to three goals, as former Phantom Jordie Vanderwal would split through the Phantom defense to narrow the Phantom lead to 6-3.Chad Manning would quickly answer back and complete the three-goal hat-trick for the Comstock Park grad, as Manning would be setup from Trent Kik to give the Phantoms their lucky seventh goal of the night.Trent Kik would cap the night with his fourth point and second goal of the contest with 4:45 remaining in the game to boost the Phantom edge to 8-3.That lead would hold true for the balance of the contest and the Phantoms would skate away with a nice 8-3 win to close out season 30.The Phantoms would out shoot Team Jager 31-22 on the night.The Phantoms would play without the services of Chris Benedict, Gordie Anderson, Justin Calkins and Darren Skuse.The Phantoms would be banished on two minors for four minutes in penalties, while Team Jager would escape without a single trip to the sin-bin.As mentioned, the Phantoms close out the Spring 2011 season with an 8-4-0-2 record.The team will return to action on Sunday, June 26th to begin the Summer 2011 season and kick-off the 31st season of Phantom Hockey.
