A three goal opening period helped the Phantoms skate to their sixth consecutive victory of the season and their first against Coon & Friends on Sunday at the Cedar Rock Sports Plex in Cedar Springs.More importantly, the victory secured their second win of the post-season in just two starts.The Phantoms overall 5-2 win against many former Phantoms started out hot and heavy for the yellow shirts, as two Phantom goals in the span of the games opening 2:20 would quickly get the large Phantom crowd rocking in their seats.Jason Schemmel would net his second of the post-season and 11th of the season to extend his personal goal scoring streak to five games, as Schemmel would beat Jeff Pacific in the Coon Cage for a 1-0 lead.A mere 30 seconds later, Trent Kik would do the same and stage his eighth of the season off a Tim Czycyk assist to expand the Phantom lead to 2-0.Late in the opening period, Chris Benedict would show-off his Muskegon talents and register his team-leading thirteenth strike of the season (unassisted) to life the Phantoms into a commanding 3-0 lead after the opening 16 minutes.The Phantom defense played outstanding, as well as the tie-tack-toe passing of the offense, as the Phantoms would out shoot Coon & Friends 11-6 in the opening frame.In the second period, Coon & Friends would manage to register their first of the game with just 6:45 remaining in the middle frame to narrow the contest to a 3-1 Phantom lead.In the second period, the Phantoms again out shot Coon & Friends 9-8.In the third period, the Phantoms would keep the contest close with some great saves by the Coon & Friends goaltender, however, the offense would not be silenced as Chris Benedict would net his second of the night with 6:57 remaining in regulation to restore the Phantom three-goal-grip at 4-1.(Gordie Anderson and Tim Vanoverloop would stage assist markers on the Benedict goal).Trying to salvage a late game comeback, Coon & Friends would again strike to keep the contest within two goals, however, a late Chris Benedict goal to complete the hat-trick with 1:49 remaining in the contest would seal the three goal advantage by the yellow shirts and a 5-2 win.The Phantoms blasted Coon & Friends in the third period and remained steady on defense, as the Phantoms out shot their advisories 14-7 in the final frame.On the game, the Phantoms outshot Coon & Friends 34-21.Both teams registered one minor penalty for two minutes on the night.The Phantoms skated without the services of John Dykehouse, Darren Skuse and Justin Calkins, Tim Czycyk was re-called to action to assist the Phantoms in the victory.The game marked the first time this season that the Phantoms have defeated Coon & Friends.Back on February 20th the Phantoms were blasted by Coon & Friends in the tail end of a double header by the final of 7-1.The Phantoms improve their overall season record to 7-3-0-2 and will again complete the overall season above .500 which has been so normal for the Mighty Phantoms over the years.The team improves to 2-0 in the semi-final rounds of the post-season and will close out their semi-final round action on Sunday, May 15th against Barely Legal at 2:00pm.
