The West Michigan Phantoms were involved in a big way during the Hockey Day Across America Weekend, however, the despite a double header on Sunday, the Yellow and Black dropped both games to fall to 1-2 on the season.The Phantoms would begin the afternoon allowing Hat-Trick Hockey to stage two goals in the third period to jump out into a 5-4 decision over the Phantoms and later in the afternoon, the Phantoms received no bounces and no luck as Coon & Friends blasted the Phantoms 7-1. The rather no luck and no bounces continues to plague the Phantoms this season not just at Cedar Rock but at Rivertown Sports as well.In now six combined games including the Phantoms and Phantom South, the Men of Phantom Nation have posted a meager 2-2-0-2 record through six clashes with three at Cedar Rock and three at Rivertown Sports.In the first game of the double header, the Phantoms would look good at the start as two goals in the final three minutes of the first period would put the yellow shirts on top 2-0 after the opening 16 minutes (Tim Vanoverloop and Chris Benedict would stage the first period goals with Justin Calkins picking up a single assist).In the second, Both teams would exchange goals 58 seconds apart (Trent Kik for the Phantoms) to advance the duel to a 3-1 Phantom lead.In the middle portion of the period, Hat-Trick Hockey would stage two more goals with a single Phantom strike (Chad Manning assisted by Trent Kik and Tim Vanoverloop) sandwiched in between to give the Phantoms a 4-3 lead after two periods.However, in the third period the Phantoms would continue to receive no luck from the hockey gods as Hat-Trick Hockey would stage two goals with the final tally occurring with 6:17 remaining in the contest to give then the come-from-behind victory over the Phantoms at 5-4.On the game, the Phantoms outshot Hat-Trick Hockey 26-25.The Phantoms would receive the only penalty of the contest in the second period for two minutes.During the final half of the double header, the Phantoms despite playing average would manage to complete costly defensive breakdowns to allow Coon & Friends to jump into a 2-0 lead after the opening period.That lead would swell to 4-0 in the second period before Chris Benedict would stage the teams only tally of the game with 4:53 remaining in the middle period to narrow the Coon & Friends lead to 4-1 after two periods of play.In the third, the Phantom landslide would continue, as three goals would be scored to give Coon & Friends a 7-1 assault over the Phantoms.Coon & Friends outshot the Phantoms 28-21 on the contest.The Phantoms were ticketed on two minors for four minutes while Coon & Friends were banished on a single trip to the sin-bin for two minutes.Darren Skuse and Jason Schemmel were sidelined for both of the Phantom games on the afternoon, Nate Tyler was called in for the second game to help the Phantoms.The pair of losses on Hockey Day Across America lowered the Phantoms overall record to 1-2 on the season.The team will return to action on Sunday, February 27th to tangle with Matt Mead and Barley Legal at 4:00pm.
