The Phantoms continue to live and not die in the current and on-going post-season at the Cedar Rock Sports Plex. On Sunday evening, the Phantoms displayed an epic performance against the undefeated Mungduhl and skated away with a huge 5-3 victory in a must-win game for the Phantoms in Cedar Springs. The victory pushes the Phantoms post-season record to 2-1 and ties them with Mungduhl for second place in the five-team play-off battle and also improves the Phantom record to a perfect 3-0 against Mungduhl dating back to the regular season. Despite Mungduhl opening the scoring late in the first period on a five-hole blast that slide past the sick Phantom netminder Wootton, Tim Czycyk would draw both teams into a 1-1 tie entering the first intermission minutes after the Mungduhl go-ahead goal. For Czycyk, the game tying strike (assisted by Tim Vanoverloop) would be his second of the post-season. Following the opening period of play, Mungduhl was out-shooting the Phantoms 7-4. In the second period, the Phantoms would begin to take charge of the scoreboard and that effort would be created by who has become one of the hottest sticks on the team in the post-season. Darren Skuse would capture his team co-leading third post-season goal of the season, as the former Komet would knock home a loose puck off a Trent Kik shot (also assisted by Justin Calkins) to put the Phantoms into their first lead of the night at 2-1. The Phantom charge would continue roughly three minutes later, as Tim Vanoverloop would tally his first point of the play-offs (unassisted) to power the yellow shirts into a 3-1 lead inter the second intermission. Mungduhl again managed to outshoot the Phantoms 10-8 in the middle period and increased their shooting advantage to 17-12 through two periods of play. In the third period, Mungduhl would begin to climb back into contention, as the orange shirts would close to within one goal just 5:04 into the period. The Phantoms would answer back just over one minute later, as Chad Manning would connect on a Trent Kik set-up feed to boost the Phantoms into a 4-2 lead. Minutes later, Tim Czycyk would tie Darren Skuse for the post-season goal scoring lead, as Czycyk would feed off a Nate Tyler to Trent Kik set-up feed to power the Phantoms into a 5-2 lead in the trailing minutes of the third period. Mungduhl would answer back 1:15 later, as a Jason Devroy blast from the right side of the Phantom cage would rocket into the back of the net to close the orange shirts to within two goals at 5-3. Despite a time-out by Mungduhl, the Phantom defense and goaltender would fend off the remaining 3:46 of the contest and skate away with a huge 5-3 victory against Mungduhl. For the third consecutive period Mungduhl outshot the Phantoms in the final frame 9-8 and outshot the Phantoms on the contest 26-20. The Phantoms were ticketed on three minors for six minutes, while Mungduhl was banished on a sole minor for two minutes. The Phantoms skated without the services of Brian Doctor and John Dykehouse. The victory pulls the Phantoms and Mungduhl into a tie for second place in the Bronze play-offs, with the Phantoms holding the tie-breaker due to the head-to-head match-up. The Phantoms will return to action on Sunday at 3:00pm to tangle the Puck-Ups in another must-win game for the Phantoms. In other league news, the Stallions and Mungduhl will clash against each other in their fourth game of the post-season.
