The Phantoms kicked-off the Summer 2010 season on an extremely positive note Sunday, downing the Puck-Ups 7-3 to begin the season. The seven goal blitz by the Phantoms was produced by five different goal scorers and marks the first time in 13 games that Phantoms have scored 7 or more goals in a single contest. Surprisingly the last time that the Phantoms were able to strike with 'lucky seven's' was back on January 10, 2010 when the yellow shirts skated to a 7-3 victory against none-other than the Puck-Ups. The most recent clash to begin the season increases the Phantom's dominance over the Puck-Ups to five straight games and increases the Phantom's three season record to an impressive and nearly unblemished record of 7-1 against Maroon-Shirts. Since the Phantom's launched their Cedar Rock franchise back in 2006, the team has struggled in season opening games. Following the 7-3 victory over the Puck-Ups on Sunday, the Phantoms have climbed above the .500 mark in season opening games. During now 14 starts, the Phantoms hold a 7-6-0-1 record combined (Bronze and Silver) and a 3-3-0-1 record for the Bronze division. On Sunday, the Phantoms wasted no time in beginning the party, as Muskegon native and Phantom veteran Brian Doctor would unleash a patented Skee-Town Bazooka Blast past Dave Sny in the Puck-Ups goal just 52 seconds into the contest to put the Phantoms on the board at 1-0. Late in the period, the Phantoms would increase their lead with just 1:44 remaining as Gordie Anderson (assisted by Trent Kik) would officially net his first Phantom goal since a May 31st, 2009 game against the Turkeys to give the Phantoms a 2-0 lead. Despite time running out, the yellow shirts would add to their lead before the buzzer, as Tim Vanoverloop would strike with an unassisted tally with 13 seconds remaining in the period to put the Phantoms up 3-0 after one period. The Phantom defense played great through the opening 16 minutes surrendering only 5 shots on goal in the opening stanza. In the second period, the Phantoms and Puck-Ups would exchange goals roughly 2:30 apart. Chad Manning would net his first of the season for the Phantoms, as the Phantom Bronze and Phantom South member would receive a set-up feed from Tim Vanoverloop and Trent Kik to lift the Phantoms to a controlling 4-0 lead. However, the Puck-Ups would finally be able to lift their goose-egg off the board with 7:14 remaining in the second period, as a shot from the slot would deflect off Phantom defensemen Justin Calkins' stick and sail behind Wootton for a 4-1 Phantom lead.  The Puck-Ups would out shoot the Phantoms 9-7 in the middle stanza. In the third period, the offense would continue for both sides. Tim Czycyk would stage his first goal of the Phantom season just 4:17 in, as the Phantom forward would receive a pass from Justin Calkins to lift the Phantoms into a 5-1 lead. Chad Manning would restore the Phantom five-goal grip two minutes later, as Trent Kik would set up Manning for this second of the night pushing the lead to 6-1. The Puck-Ups would then manage to net their second of the night as a shot from the left point would allude Wootton in the Phantom goal to narrow the score to 6-2. Late in the period with the Phantom's Brian Doctor serving an interference infraction, the Puck-Ups would net a powerplay goal as an innocent looking shot from the point would find the back of the net to complete Puck-Up scoring at three goals. Gordie Anderson would complete Phantom scoring with his second of the night, as the former Muskegon Dragon and former Ground Zero member would net an empty net goal with 33 seconds remaining in the tilt to give the Phantoms a 7-3 victory against the Puck-Ups. In the third period, The Phantoms out shot the Puck-Ups 9-6. On the game, the Phantoms out shot their opposition 26-20. On the 96KBPS.com Internet Radio's Crime Watch, both teams were ticketed with one minor for two minutes. The Phantoms will enjoy Memorial Day weekend off and return to Cedar Rock on Sunday, June 6th.
