The Phantoms were able to capture two huge points in the Bronze standings on Sunday afternoon as the team excelled to a 5-3 victory over Howies. The victory against the premier hockey team in the region is the first of the season for the Phantoms and ends a three game losing skid against the former Calvin College group dating back previous seasons. Moreover, the victory is only the eight win against the Calvin Kids spanning the past 25 meetings (the previous 23 meetings were played in the Silver division). On the defensive end, the three goals scored by Howies marks the fewest goals they have scored in 25 contests against the Phantoms in Cedar Springs. The Phantoms were able to open the games scoring mid-way into the opening period, as Chad Manning (assisted by Tim Czycyk) would beat Howie netminder Mike Staple to give the Phantoms a 1-0 lead. That slim single goal lead would hold into the opening intermission, as Phantom netminder Kevin Wootton would fend off all 7 opening period shots by Howies. In the second period, Howies would quickly answer and even the duel just 24 seconds into the second period. Justin Calkins would be unable to clear the puck behind the Phantom goal and a Howie forward would send a sweet-lead centering-feed right in front to a wide open Koole brother who just saucered the puck past Wootton for a 1-1 game. The Phantoms would jump back into the lead roughly three minutes later, as Chris Wietfeldt would stage his first goal as a Phantom (assisted by Trent Kik and Tim Vanoverloop). That lead would be short-lived, as Howies would answer back just 36 seconds later to again tie the game at 2-2. Both the Phantoms and Howies would enter the second intermission tied at 2-2 and both teams would be even on the shot clock with 16 apiece through two periods of hockey. The Phantoms would watch their lead slip and fall behind for the first time in the contest just 3:21 into the third period, as Howies would register a high pop-fly past Wootton for a 3-2 Howie lead. The Phantoms would charge back and tie the contest 3:59 later, as Tim Czycyk would net his team leading sixth goal of the season (assisted by Matt Mead and Chad Manning) to bring the Phantoms into a 3-3 tie. Minutes later, the Phantoms thought they had restored the lead off a Trent Kik blast, but despite the officials initially calling the goal good, it was waived off as Darren Skuse was reportedly in the crease. The blow to the Phantoms only energized the group, as less than a minute later Jason Schemmel would restore the Phantom lead at 4-3 (assisted by Brian Doctor). The Schemmel strike would be his second of the season and was scored with just 6:52 remaining in the third period. Despite Howies attempting to attain the equalizer, the Phantom defense and back-checking efforts from the forwards would curtail any effort by Howies. Chris Wietfeld would put the game on ice with 39 seconds remaining in the game, as the Sparta High School native would net an empty net goal (assisted by Tim Vanoverloop) for his second of the game and a 5-3 Phantom lead. With just seconds remaining in the contest, Chris Wietfeld would hold the puck against the boards behind the Phantom cage and Howie forward Chuck McCloud would play the Phantom's game leading scoring rough and both sides would come together at the buzzer. Despite a mix of four players, Chuck McCloud would be dealt the only penalty and game suspension. The victory by the Phantoms improves the team to a 3-2 record and pulls the team above the .500 level for the first time this season. On the game, Howies out shot the Phantoms 25-23. On the 96KBPS.com Internet Radio's Crime Watch, Howies would be ticketed with all the penalties during the contest; one minor and one major for seven total minutes. On the scoresheet, eight different Phantoms would register points in the 5-3 decision.
