The West Michigan Phantoms were able to climb back to the .500 mark on Sunday night and in doing so increased their winning streak against the Hawks to six straight games with a 4-3 win at Cedar Rock. The Phantoms who entered the contest pumped up and ready to compete opened the games scoring 3:31 into the game, as Jason Schemmel would net his first goal of the season to launch the Phantoms into a 1-0 lead. The Phantom game opening strike would occur on the penalty kill, as Kevin Groothuis was banished on a hooking infraction just 2:21 into the game. Late in the opening period, the Hawks would capitalize on a missed clearing attempt by the yellow shirts and stage their game tying goal with 3:59 remaining in the opening period. The Phantoms would answer back quickly, as Tim Vanoverloop would set up Chad Manning 1:43 after the Hawks tying goal to regain Phantom control at 2-1 entering the first intermission. For Manning, that would be his fourth goal of the season. In the second period, the Phantoms and Hawks would go end to end with scoring chances. Late in the middle stanza, the Phantoms would climb into their first and only multi-goal lead of the night. The Sparta Line with the Spartans of Chris Wietfeldt and Trent Kik would combine with a strike with 1:07 remaining to give the Phantoms a 3-1 lead. For Kik, this was his second of the season and 96th career Phantom goal at Cedar Rock. In the third period, the Hawks would continue to dig in and that effort would eventually pay off. The Hawks would narrow the game to a one-goal contest just 3:40 into the third period, as the Phantom goaltender and defense would be unable to clear a loose puck in front of the Phantom cage and with a mass of players fighting for control, the Hawks would find the biscuit and bury it into the net to shrink the Phantom lead to 3-2. Late in the period, the Phantom's Jason Schemmel would be sentenced on a tripping infraction near the Phantom bench with 2:14 remaining in regulation. The Hawks would use their powerplay to the fullest, as they would manage to slide the puck under the pad of Wootton in the Phantom goal to tie the game at 3-3 with just 1:21 remaining. The Hawk power play unit would tally that game tying strike just 53 seconds into their extra-man-band. With the game tied at 3-3 and most people expecting an overtime shoot out, the Phantoms would strike. Brian Doctor would gain control inside the Phantom zone and freight train into the Hawks end. The Mona Shores grad, with the added boost of Trent Kik on the far side, would make the Hawks goaltender cringe as a Phantom strike was eminent. Doctor, knowing that the goaltender was expecting a pass to Kik, would keep the puck and launch a powerful Sailor Saucer to the back of the cage for a 4-3 Phantom lead with just 48 seconds remaining. For Doctor, this would be second of the season. Despite the Hawk goaltender pulled, the Phantom defense would fend off the remaining 48 seconds and skate to a 4-3 victory against the Hawks. On the game, the Phantoms out shot the Hawks 27-26. On the 96KBPS.com's Internet Radio Crime Watch, the Phantoms were ticketed with two minors for four minutes and the Hawks were sentenced on a single minor for two minutes. The Phantoms played without the services of Darren Skuse who was scratched due to sickness. Kevin Groothuis received his second straight call to action for the yellow shirts and first on the offensive line. The Phantoms will take a week off next week and should return to action on Superbowl Sunday. Cedar Rock is holding off on the schedule and game times for that day, but early games are expected.
