The West Michigan Phantoms suffered their second defeat of the young season and third straight lifetime against Team Chowder Sunday night at the Cedar Rock Sports Plex. With a roster without the club's top two expected goal scorers, the Phantom's had their hands full and just did not receive any breaks during the entire contest. Team Chowder would open the scoring just past the halfway mark of the opening period, as a 1-1 scoring attempt would find the back of the Phantom cage with 6:21 remaining in the period. The Phantom's would find their luck tarnished again late in the opening period, as Team Chowder would capitalize on two Phantom netminder errors in a span of just 1:13. The late two-goal blitz by the soup Nazis would take the wind out of the Phantom sails, as the orange shirts would hold a 3-1 lead going into the first intermission. The Men of Phantom Nation would attempt a comeback in the second, as Chad Manning (unassisted) would strike just 1:54 into the middle stanza to put the Phantoms on the board 1-3. For Manning it would his fourth goal of the season. Despite an end-to-end middle period in which both the Phantoms and Team Chowder would skate to their fullest, the Phantom's two goal deficit would increase to three late in the period, as Team Chowder would strike with their fourth goal with 3:34 remaining in the second period to climb into a 4-1. That Chowder tally would occur while both the Phantoms and Team Chowder were skating 3-on-3. In the third period, the Phantoms just could not generate enough energy or momentum to get back into the game. Team Chowder would register their fifth goal of the night with just 1:53 remaining in the game to take climb to a 5-1 decision against the Phantoms. On the game, Team Chowder out shot the Phantoms 24-22. On the 96KBPS.com's Internet Radio Crime Watch, the Phantoms would be guilty of two minors for six minutes, while Team Chowder was ticketed on two minors for four minutes. The Phantom's played without the services of Jason Schemmel and Tim Czycyk. Nate Tyler and Kevin Groothuis were called into action for the Phantoms to fill the void. For Groothuis, it was since first game back with the Phantoms since 2003. Welcome back to Phantom Hockey Kevin and it is great to see #7 active again. The Phantoms will return to the snow covered cornfield in Cedar Springs next Sunday at 7:00pm to tangle with the Hawks. Phantom Hockey...27 Seasons Long, 27 Seasons Strong.
