When it comes to some of the tightest defensive games and most thrilling games in the history of hockey in Cedar Rocks adult leagues, the Junkyard Dawgs and Phantoms continue to set the benchmark. On Sunday night, both those two teams collided for the second and final time during the regular season and the game was again a nail-bitter to the end. Seven weeks ago on April 26th, these two clubs met and the decision was decided in the overtime shoot-out, where the Phantoms edged the Junkyard Dawgs to earn a 3-2 win. Seven weeks later, the same setting would be needed to settle the score between two of the greatest franchises at Cedar Rock. The goaltending combination of Dave Sny (Junkyard Dawgs) and Kevin Wootton (Phantoms) are well-liked off the rink, but forwards and defensemen seem to frown when they are forced to shoot against either of these two netminders, who have historically been the top-two goaltenders in the bronze league for the past several years. On Sunday, it would be goaltending duel to the end, as members of the Dawgs and Phantoms would just shake their heads in disgust, just wondering how some many of their scoring opportunities could have destroyed by the spectacular saves at either end. Through two periods of hockey and a combined shot total of 29, both the Dawgs and Phantoms would be held scoreless. Late in the opening period, the Phantoms Chuck McCloud would gain control of the puck in the neutral zone and unleash a complete rocket just inside the Dawg zone. The howitzer would just skim off a Dawg defensemen in front and curtail over the glove of Sny in the goal, giving the Phantoms a huge 1-0 lead with just 2:53 remaining in the game. Minutes later, the Dawgs would single their time-out and both goaltenders would meet and discuss the apparent misfortune of not being able to prolong the game into a shoot-out. However, for the Phantoms Kevin Wootton, that talk may have been a curse. With the Dawgs throwing a complete surge towards the Phantom goal, a shot from near the left-wing circle would manage to ping-pong through players and deflect off the Phantoms Chad Mannings skate in front of the goal. With Wootton some-what aware of the pucks location, he tired to slink is body around to make to the save. But, the biscuit would just slither across the goal line before the Phantom veteran was able to glove it, and with just 48 seconds remaining in the game, the scoreboard was tied. For the second time this season, an overtime shoot-out would be needed to resolve a winner. The Phantoms choose to shoot last. Wootton, who was always excelled in the shoot-out, was ready to do it again. A diving poke-check would negate the Dawgs on their first shot. For the Phantoms, Chad Manning would connect to give the Good-Ole-Yellow-Shirts a 1-0 lead. The Dawgs would not be able to answer to the second round, as a blocker save by Wootton would deflect the puck off the post and to the outside. Matt Mead would not be able to tally the game winner for the Phantoms, and as a result, the Dawgs would have one last opportunity to stay alive. Former goalie, Gabe Bolen would try to duek Wootton from the front of the goal, but the huge paddle of the Sherword would kill the puck in its tracks and finalize the verdict for the Phantoms. The victory improved the Phantom record to 4-4-0-1. On the game, the Phantoms were ticketed with two minors for four minutes, while the Dawgs were banished on one minor for two minutes. The Junkyard Dawgs out shot the Phantoms 28-17 on the night. The Phantoms will close out the regular season on June 28th, when the team plays the Hawks at 5:00pm.
