One season ago the West Michigan Phantoms closed out the teams play-off season with a 3-1 loss to the Sharkies. One season later, the same two teams would collide to open the post-season. On Sunday, the Phantoms and Sharkies collided for just the second time this season and it would be the Phantoms who pulled away with a four-goal third period to take a 7-3 victory to open the 2008 Summer post-season. Tim Czycyk would put the Phantoms on the board 6:04 into the contest, as the Phantom and Rivertowns Blue Vortex offensemen would connect on a Jason Schemmel pass to put the Phantoms on the board at 1-0. The Sharkies would respond roughly four minutes later to even the contest at a goal apiece. However, as quickly as the Sharkies tied it, the Phantoms Tim Czycyk would regain the lead 14 seconds later, again on a Jason Schemmel pass, to restore the Phantom lead at 2-1. The Phantoms would continue their assault late in the opening period as Keith Mooreman would tally his 6th goal of the season to expand the Phantom lead to 3-1. With time running out, the Sharkies would mount pressure deep inside the Phantom zone. With a loose-puck battle to the left of the Phantom net, the puck would find the stick of a Sharkies forward and with 23 seconds remaining in the opening period the Sharkies would narrow the contest to a 3-2 Phantom lead. One interesting fact during the opening 16 minutes was the fact that of 7 total shots between both the Phantoms and Sharkies, 5 goals would be scored. That does not say much about the goaltenders in the opening period. In the second period, the netminders would shake off a rusty opening period and begin to make key saves. The Sharkies would complete their two-goal come-from-behind push 6:54 into the stanza, as the Sharkies would penetrate the Phantom defense and netminder on a slot-shot to tie the contest at 3-3. Despite a late Phantom penalty to Matt Mead, the Phantoms and Sharkies would close out the middle period deadlocked at 3-3. In the third period, the Phantoms would turn on the offensive scoring machine and take charge. Brett Smith would begin the surge 2:56 into the period, as the longtime Phantom would connect a Keith Mooreman pass to capture the Phantoms third lead of the night at 4-3. Matt Mead would increase the lead to two-goals, as this longtime Phantom would be set-up by Tim Vanoverloop to give the Phantoms a 5-3 lead. Minutes later, Mead would again light the lamp on a Keith Mooreman assist to rocket the Men of Phantom Nation into a 6-3 lead. With less than a minute remaining, Phantom netminder Kevin Wootton would control the puck at the edge of his crease and launch a crisp and clean pass to Jason Schemmel near the Phantom left boards. The Phantom offensemen would skate in on a breakaway to seal the game with his first of the night and give the Phantoms a 7-3 victory in the teams first game of the post-season. On the season, the victory improves the Phantoms overall record to 7-4. On the game, the Phantoms out shot the Sharkies 27-21. On the Nautys Penalty Minute Board, both teams were ticketed with a single minor for two minutes each. The Phantoms will return to action on October 19th to tangle with the winless K-Ortega.
