The Phantoms opened the 2008 Summer season with a split of the team's double header. The Phantoms suffered a disappointing 5-3 loss against the Puck-Ups in the opener and responded with a 13-3 victory over DC Byres in the nightcap. During the opening match, the Phantom's Darren Skuse and Keith Mooreman would strike late in the opening period to give the Phantoms a 2-0 lead after the opening 16 minutes. In the second, Keith Mooreman would expand the Phantom lead to 3-0 with a goal 6:23 into the period. However, just as the Phantoms displayed last season no lead is safe. Just seconds following the Phantom strike, the Puck-ups would capitalize on a breakaway goal to truncate the shut-out putting the Puck-ups on the board. Roughly five minutes later, the Phantom goaltender would be hand-cuffed on what appeared to be a normal innocent looking play, however after the puck crossed the goal line narrowing the Phantom lead to 3-2, the Phantoms knew that their misfortune and troubles from last season would possibly return. In the third period, the Phantoms and Puck-ups would be silenced on the score sheet until the final two minutes. With a mere 1:21 remaining in the period, the Puck-ups would capitalize on some bad defensive errors by the Phantoms and tie the game at 3-3. As if the lessons from last season were not learned by the Phantoms, the Puck-ups would stun the Phantoms 31 seconds later on a give-away inside the Phantom zone and with just 50 seconds left on the clock the Puck-ups would take their first lead of the night at 4-3. With the Phantom netminder on the bench for the extra attacker, the lack of offense by the Phantoms combined with some sloppy pressure would doom the Yellow Shirts in the opener. With just 1 second left on the clock, the Puck-ups would net an empty net goal to seal the deal at 5-3. On the game, the Puck-ups would out shoot the Phantoms 29-28, including 15-10 in the third period alone. On the Nauty's Penalty Minute Board, the Phantoms would be ticketed with two minors for four minutes, while the Puck-Ups would escape with nothing. The Phantoms skated without Brett Vandonkelaar, Tim Vanoverloop and Chad Manning during the contest.
During the second part of the team's double header, the Phantom's offense was turned on and the team cruised to a 13-3 victory over DC Byers. Tim Vanoverloop would open the game's scoring 1:25 into the period to give the Phantoms a 1-0 lead. Roughly two minutes later, Brett Smith would increase the Phantom lead to 2-0 lead with his first of the season. DC Byers would get on the board with their first shot on the Phantom net with 10:30 remaining in the period trimming the Phantom to 2-1. Brett Smith would again give the Phantoms a two-goal lead 1:09 later to keep the back and forth scoring upbeat. DC Byers would then answer on their second shot towards the Phantom goal trimming their deficit to 3-2. The Phantom's Jason Schemmel would then answer 1:39 later on his first of the season to restore the two-goal-grip at 4-2. However, the misfortunes of the Phantom netminder would continue 46 seconds later as DC Byers would capture their third goal of the game on the team's third shot to again make it a one-goal game at 4-3. After that, the Phantom's would hunker down, settle in and put on cruise control as the Yellow Shirts would complete the game with the next 9 goals to capture their first victory of the season at 13-3. On the game, three players would capture hat-tricks including Brett Smith, Jason Schemmel and Keith Mooreman. Justin Calkins would answer with a pair of goals and Tim Vanoverloop and Darren Skuse would stage a singleton for the Phantoms. The Phantoms out shot DC Byers 21-18. The only penalty on the Nauty's Penalty Minute Board would go to DC Byers for two minutes. The Phantoms skated without Chad Manning and Brent Vandonkelaar during the contest.
