The drought is finally over. The West Michigan Phantoms surprised nearly everyone in the building on Sunday as the Phantoms topped the league-leading Junkyard Dawgs 4-3 to close out the regular season. In a game that went back and back for the entire 48 minute contest, the Phantoms Justin Calkins delivered the ultimate game-winner with 7:43 remaining in regulation to lift the Phantoms over the Dawgs ending a sour four-game losing skid. The Phantoms would get on the board first as Jason Schemmel would tally a strike with a mere 41 seconds remaining the opening period to bring the Phantoms into a 1-0 lead after the opening period. In the second period, Kraig Brown would score a power-play goal for the Junkyard Dawgs to even the contest at 1-1. The power-play goal would be scored as Keith Mooreman sat in the Phantom sin-bin on a tripping infraction. Following the game-tying goal, the Dawgs would continue their pressure 3:06 later, as Kraig Brown would tally his second of the night to lift the Blue-Shirts into a 2-1 lead. The seesaw battle would continue late in the period, as Tim Vanoverloop would strike for the Phantoms with 1:11 remaining in the middle stanza on an assist from Brent VanDonkelear to even the game at 2-2. In the third period the Phantoms would re-gain the lead 6:19 into the period, as Brent Vandonkelear would tally an unassisted strike to put Phantom Nation on top at 3-2. Roughly 1:30 later the Dawgs would answer to even the game at 3-3. With the close game fueling the players energy, the Phantoms wasted no time in answering again. Exactly 40 seconds following the Dawg strike; Justin Calkins would answer for the Phantoms putting the Yellow Shirts back into the lead at 4-3 with 7:43 remaining in the game. Despite three penalties to the Phantoms during the balance of the game, including a Junkyard Dawg 5-2 advantage (netminder pulled for the extra attacker) for the final 2:19 of the period, the Phantoms would hold on to capture the victory the 4-3. The victory pulls the Phantoms back onto solid ground, as the team completes the regular season with a 4-4-2 record. On the game, the Junkyard Dawgs out shot the Phantoms 28-25. The Dawgs were ticketed for five penalties for ten minutes, while the Phantoms were also ticketed for five penalties for ten minutes. Phantom neminder Kevin Wootton was the only scratch for Phantom Nation, as the veteran netminder was in Chicago getting ready to board a loaded coal train for Holland. Jeff Pacific was terrific in goal for the Phantoms, as Jeff played one-hell-of-a-game for the Phantoms. Everyone on the Phantoms would like to express their gratitude to Jeff for guarding the pipes. The Phantoms will return to action on Sunday at 9:00pm to begin the post-season. The Phantoms will tangle with the Puck-Ups in the opening contest.
