Despite a scoreless opening period, the Phantoms on the strength of three straight goals by Brad Zehr were able to capture their fourth victory of the season on Sunday disposing of the Missiles by the final of 6-2. The victory was a huge win for the Phantoms who were able to take the two points from the win and add some insurance to the teams second place ranking which now stands four points superior to the Red Devils. As mentioned, the opening period was a defensive clash between both the Phantoms and the Missiles. Despite a total of 17 shots being taken at the netminders, both goaltenders would stand their ground and complete the opening 16 minutes scoreless. It would take 3:23 into the second period before either team would be able to get on the board, as it would be the Phantoms Brad Zehr scoring an unassisted strike to lift the Phantoms into a 1-0 lead. The Phantoms defensive member would again combine roughly six minutes later from a Nate Tyler pass to expand the lead to 2-0 for the Men of Phantom Nation. The two Phantom goals in the middle stanza would conclude the scoring for the period. In the third period, the offense from both teams would begin to find breakdowns in each goaltender. It would be the Phantoms opening the third period assault of the netminders 4:41 into the period, as Mike Devore would set up Brad Zehr for his third of the night completing the hat trick and giving the Phantoms a commanding 3-0 lead. Roughly five minutes later, Casey Rosenberg (A-Chris Benedict, Scott Vandonkelaar) would strike with his sixth goal of the season to increase the lead to 4-0. However, following a holding penalty to the Phantoms Nate Tyler, Mike Devore would begin to take exception to one particular referees call. Devore would begin to serenade the official, however, apparently the thin-skinned and unprofessional official preferred classical music, as the zebra would hand Devore a minor penalty as well as a 10-misconduct. With the Missiles given a glorious opportunity to mount a rally, the two-man-advantage would take only 34 seconds to pay-off as the Missiles would tally their first strike of the game with 3:52 remaining in the game. With the power-play goal the Phantoms were able to gain an attacker, however, still had 78 seconds remaining in the unsportsmanlike penalty to Mike Devore. For the Missiles, they would again take the opportunity to seize a benefit from the Phantom penalties and tally another strike just 48 seconds after their first goal to bring the Missiles to with-in two goals at 4-2. Despite the Dominick Hasek like skills of the Phantom netminder within that minute of play, the Phantoms would return to full strength and Chris Benedict would strike with his seventh of the season to regain the Phantom three-goal-grip at 5-2. It would take just 1:12 following the Benny strike for Casey Rosenberg to put the finishing touches on the game with his seventh of the season and give the Phantoms a clear and decisive 6-2 victory. The win improves the Phantoms record to 4-2. The team currently sits four points ahead of the Red Devils in second place and three points back of league-leading and three-time champion Howies. The Phantoms out shot the Missiles 31-23 on the night. The Phantoms were ticketed for five minors for ten minutes and a 10-minute misconduct. For the Missiles, the team was faced with two minors for four minutes. The Phantoms played without the services of Jason Devroy and Ty Coon. The Men of Phantom Nation will return to action on April 27th to tangle with league-leading Howies. Gametime for that contest will be 5:00pm. Players are reminded to turn in their extra league fees ASAP. (Full-time players owe $10, part-time players owe $5.)
