Entering Sunday's contest at the Plex in Cedar Springs, the Phantoms played 11 games of the Summer 2007 season. As the Phantom players talked to one another prior to the start of the first of two games scheduled for the Phantoms on Sunday, one Phantom player commented about the most recent Phantom-Howie clash back on September 16th. During his statement, he mentioned how that game was by far the worst game played by the Phantoms this season. Apparently the entire team took notice. As the Phantoms began play against Howie's, it was the Phantoms dressed in their road grays that rose to the challenge. A mere 1:40 into the Contest, Scott VanDonkelaar broke though the Howie defense to put the Yellow and Black on the board. Moments later, Nate Tyer would connect to increase the Phantom lead to 2-0. Minutes Later, Matt Zehr would connect to continue the Phantom assault at 3-0. The Phantoms would not slow down, as a mere 10:16 after the Phantoms first notched a tally on the scoreboard, Matt Zehr would connect again for the Phantoms who took a stunning 4-0 lead in the game. Despite a Howie's goal with one-second remaining on the clock, the Phantoms would close out the first period with a commanding 4-1 lead. As the puck dropped on the second period, the Phantoms would waste no time regaining a four-goal grip as Casey Rosenberg would score a mere 2:10 into the second period. Following the goal, Howie's knew they had to start narrowing the score if they had any hope to make this a game. During the middle stanza, Howie's would play sensational, outshooting the Phantoms 20-5. Yet, while the Howie's offense was pouring on the pressure, the Phantom Offense, Defense and Goaltender would fight back and play what very well could be described as the best defensive period played by the Phantoms this season. Despite Howie's registering 20 shots on goal during that period, the Calvin College Kids would muster only a single goal. With the Phantoms leading 5-2 after two periods, the team knew that a victory here would almost certainly guarantee them a trip to the championship dance. During the final period, Howie's would trim the Phantom lead to 5-3, as Max Seplinga tallied his second of the game. Yet, Phantom goals by Gordie Anderson and Casey Rosenberg 35-seconds apart would all but seal the deal for the Phantoms. Max would score his third of the night to complete the hat-trick with 1:08 remaining in regulation, yet it would be the Phantoms capturing the victory by the final of 7-4. For the game, the Phantoms would be out-shot by Howie's by the wide margin of 41-22. The Phantoms would be ticketed for five minors for 10 minutes, while Howie's was ticketed for two minutes for 4 minutes. A very well played game by the entire Phantom crew was acknowledged by not only the Phantom players and Phantom fans, but also by several Howie players as well. The Phantoms wore their 'dark jerseys' against Howie's during the contest to allow Howie's to ware their traditional yellow. The Phantom's were proud to wear the black in memory of the legendary Chicago Blackhawk Owner Bill Wirtz who passed away nearly one week ago. Phantom Hockey...We Are The Phantoms!
